{"id":152368,"date":"2025-10-06T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=152368"},"modified":"2025-10-05T18:16:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T23:16:25","slug":"now-is-the-time-fcc-commissioner-warns-of-free-speech-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/now-is-the-time-fcc-commissioner-warns-of-free-speech-threats\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Now is the Time&#8217;: FCC Commissioner Warns of Free Speech Threats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Anna Gomez urges Ole Miss students to courageously champion First Amendment<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>FCC Commissioner <strong>Anna Gomez<\/strong> made the 17thstop of her nationwide First Amendment Tour on Thursday (Oct. 2) evening at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>, where she discussed censorship and the chilling effect it can have on free speech and free press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gomez,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/68109bdbdb1e485f8484efe2b7621a30\/1\/7f051f11c1cd43d4f0c3de55185bf014b9055a5c8350a01c6d822f2aef1aed3e?cache_buster=1759519088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of three sitting members<\/a>\u00a0of the <strong>Federal Communications Commission<\/strong>, launched the tour earlier this year to spotlight threats to First Amendment rights for all Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been focused on shining a light on the ways in which the FCC actions have been threatening freedom of speech and freedom of the press,&#8221; she said &#8220;The First Amendment has protected our fundamental right to speak freely and to hold power to account since 1791.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is foundational to our democracy, and today, I am here to tell you that foundation is trembling.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referencing the recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/68109bdbdb1e485f8484efe2b7621a30\/2\/329d5946468edf02a2081d07175d71602dc655fa2eb4eee81a8e1734f372c8fc?cache_buster=1759519088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">temporary removal of late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>&nbsp;alongside the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/68109bdbdb1e485f8484efe2b7621a30\/3\/22e0168608ceede6bb32e67dea57f804cb3ccae57c82db4b302673851f449acc?cache_buster=1759519088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposed merger of media giants Paramount and Warner Bros.<\/a>, Gomez painted a scene of local media outlets being bought out and erased while major corporations capitulate to pressure from the FCC and other governmental bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is in moments like these when it is important to understand that the FCC does not have the authority, the ability or the constitutional right to police lawful content or to punish broadcasters for speech the government dislikes,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And if it were to take that unprecedented step &#8230; it would run headlong into the First Amendment and fail in court.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The role of Mississippi and the university in civil rights and press freedom issues makes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/68109bdbdb1e485f8484efe2b7621a30\/4\/f5f68c62f17aa72aac0410d734b003f2a54f1cee9a05a4c33efd7ce560d148a3?cache_buster=1759519088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ole Miss<\/a>&nbsp;a poignant place to voice concerns about First Amendment protections, said Steve Herman, executive director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/68109bdbdb1e485f8484efe2b7621a30\/5\/5bb15d9577811cd2dfc4496670d7610eb0fd9d0aa53e5c0c5cec9fa8597abc59?cache_buster=1759519088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jordan Center for Journalism Advocacy and Innovation<\/a>, which hosted the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our First Amendment does need to be protected, and there&#8217;s already a discussion underway about how it should be interpreted in these contentious times,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There&#8217;s no better place than the Ole Miss campus to have this kind of discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Even if you may disagree with another person&#8217;s interpretation, it&#8217;s very important to hear and discuss different points of view. The First Amendment should apply equally across the political spectrum.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 100 students and community members gathered in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/68109bdbdb1e485f8484efe2b7621a30\/6\/76a2ce08ca4d3bb5346d271b84f4d74651f0c61beaa5c60689bf7e9f85cc486a?cache_buster=1759519088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to hear Gomez&#8217;s speech. At the beginning of the event, Rear Adm. <strong>Jamie Barnett<\/strong>, adjunct professor in the <strong>Center for Intelligence and Security Studies<\/strong>, asked all journalism students in the room to stand, rousing more than a dozen from their seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m so glad to see all of you stand up, because you are so important to our democracy,&#8221; Gomez said. &#8220;It is journalists that report without fear or favor that hold power to account, and we need you.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While particularly salient to journalism students, the power and importance of the First Amendment matters to everyone, said <strong>Andrea Hickerson<\/strong>, dean of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/68109bdbdb1e485f8484efe2b7621a30\/7\/40b6c19cf45b5cdc0234c2c6281230059055cfbae178c8f99c1e60c916d79bff?cache_buster=1759519088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>School of Journalism and New Media<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the things that really resonated with me was free speech being a bipartisan issue,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This is an opportunity to show our flagship mission in how we support this kind of dialogue.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aziza Darwish<\/strong>, a freshman psychology major from <strong>Olive Branch<\/strong>, decided to attend after she saw posters around campus about the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve become so used to seeing these events \u2013 these terrible things that keep happening \u2013 and thinking it&#8217;s normal,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not. If we keep saying &#8216;We&#8217;ll see how it goes,&#8217; things won&#8217;t change.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We know how important the First Amendment is, especially in these times. For us \u2013 Gen Z and Gen Alpha \u2013 it&#8217;s important that we&#8217;re informed because with social media and all these things that we have now, we&#8217;re more connected than we&#8217;ve ever been before. That gives us strength.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma Scruggs, a junior public policy and leadership major from <strong>Ocean Springs<\/strong>, said she attended after hearing about the event in her position with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/68109bdbdb1e485f8484efe2b7621a30\/8\/d31319667d8e5153643b513c4f011d88f45c58da54701beaf55f589b7ca9b6d1?cache_buster=1759519088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Associated Student Body<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been aware of issues surrounding the First Amendment, especially with what happened with Jimmy Kimmel,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But it wasn&#8217;t at the forefront of my attention. It was really interesting to get a different perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For students, having speakers like this shows you role models and someone you can strive to be. It gives you a goal you can see.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gomez began her cross-country tour&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/68109bdbdb1e485f8484efe2b7621a30\/9\/103a1e5ce632c33a253ef918550aad3f48b4d9715dadbfdf89b34e4319e45d81?cache_buster=1759519088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in Los Angeles on May 28<\/a>.
