Atkinson<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Three threads of <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> and civil rights history \u2013 <strong>Medgar Evers<\/strong>, <strong>Bob Dylan<\/strong>, and <strong>Jerry Mitchell<\/strong> \u2013 will be woven together in a public conversation <strong>October 8<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The free, public event is set for 5:30 pm in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/f9dd35fd16f4457fbcb8273961fc7c98\/1\/bfc0b92f49e99c5a2877a4a6f98f05b201d73729bace8d64fcf43c007c14cbba?cache_buster=1759336441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0auditorium. It will feature a panel discussion about Dylan&#8217;s &#8220;Only a Pawn in Their Game,&#8221; performed at the <strong>1963 Delta Folk Jubilee<\/strong> in <strong>Greenwood<\/strong>, and the assassination of Evers just weeks earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event also marks the 100th anniversary of Evers&#8217; birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 44%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>&#8220;The more I researched Dylan&#8217;s 1963 trip to Greenwood, the more I realized this was a significant event in the trajectories of both Dylan&#8217;s career and in the Mississippi civil rights movement,&#8221; said <strong>R.J. Morgan<\/strong>, associate professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/f9dd35fd16f4457fbcb8273961fc7c98\/2\/183c6ae4ff51a40e6f16b2e38b999c48a9992e731b8acf940a4ae64ef6c9af11?cache_buster=1759336441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">journalism<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/f9dd35fd16f4457fbcb8273961fc7c98\/3\/58523d8f82a03db682d7f586a30e61850eab7232cfef6e7e0b109f95867ef0fa?cache_buster=1759336441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resident Dylan scholar<\/a>\u00a0whose research into the Greenwood event has evolved into a book project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This was Dylan&#8217;s first trip to the segregated South, and it took a lot of courage to come perform in Mississippi at that time. daughter and executive director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/f9dd35fd16f4457fbcb8273961fc7c98\/4\/18fc73a96da019820fd43f4d8f751cd0ba2b7af823d0263acf8ad30350527aeb?cache_buster=1759336441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute<\/strong><\/a>; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/f9dd35fd16f4457fbcb8273961fc7c98\/5\/2cc98dc2cbbbbdc033091732c1cf0f9e61ab7ef0e2a9fb05df13b8070b3870a3?cache_buster=1759336441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Jerry Mitchell<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Mississippi Today<\/strong> investigative reporter whose cold case reporting helped bring Evers&#8217; killer to justice in the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panel will also share the life and legacy of Evers, who fought injustice his entire life as a World War II veteran and NAACP field secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evers is a patriot, Mitchell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During World War II, Evers fought on the beaches of Normandy and was later part of the group of soldiers called the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/f9dd35fd16f4457fbcb8273961fc7c98\/6\/962479f69bf9611b75f83390544f7708f4e6f2d23b7cbe94782743bfb78a6d87?cache_buster=1759336441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Red Ball Express<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0who provided fuel and food to troops routing German forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;After defeating the Nazis, Evers returned home to fight racism all over again in the form of Jim Crow, which barred Black Mississippians from restaurants, from restrooms and from voting booths,&#8221; Mitchell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evers applied to the Ole Miss School of Law in 1954 but was rejected because of his race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;NAACP officials considered appealing his case<strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong>but they were so impressed with him, they offered him a job instead,&#8221; Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A new generation has an awareness about Dylan and how he became a spokesperson for a generation, and for a generation of change, said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/f9dd35fd16f4457fbcb8273961fc7c98\/7\/0d5428c3a0f8c8c8c71bce138276f8ad30adcbf70938ea897094796244786aab?cache_buster=1759336441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tony Pederson<\/strong><\/a>, Overby Center managing fellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the main ideas at the Overby Center is to emphasize free speech and freedom of expression and the positive impact that it has on a society,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Music that was written in the &#8217;60s that was a call for change and for activism; that resonates today just as well as it did 60 years ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pederson and Morgan hope audience members realize the significance of Evers, Dylan, and Mississippi in the past and present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Freedom songs were a powerful cultural movement in the 1960s,&#8221; Morgan said. &#8220;This program is an opportunity to learn some Mississippi history and to reflect on the power of song.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14544\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Panel to examine Dylan&#8217;s Greenwood performance and Evers&#8217; enduring impact By Marisa C.
