This summer, she joined <strong>George Lucas<\/strong>, <strong>Queen Latifah<\/strong>, and <strong>Ryan Gosling<\/strong> to bring that love to the stages of <strong>San Diego Comic-Con International<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goulet, professor of biology at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/1\/dfe19b807c4debc8fae77607e9994491bca8e2a49b216db00003f0724338004c?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>, was among 16\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/2\/7d4a26139884dcdbe374e8bef46bd90d581ce5fdd8024ccb656bc6f2a43a83a9?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>IF\/THEN Ambassadors<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0who put the science back in science fiction at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/3\/04b46825979a3aab01ff0b9604dd84aaa2e8fc024852ce7ddcf4fef76a241ea1?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">56th annual Comic-Con<\/a>. More than 135,000 avid fans of comic books, graphic novels, video games, and anime were in attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The reason I went to Comic-Con \u2013 the reason I said yes \u2013 was initially because it absolutely aligns with why I&#8217;m an ambassador and why I&#8217;ve taught our introductory biology course for 25 years, because I find it thrilling to explain science and to get people excited about science,&#8221; Goulet said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I find it challenging, rewarding, and important because not everyone needs to be a scientist, yet science surrounds everything that we do.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IF\/THEN program \u2013 named for the idea that &#8216;if she can see it, then she can be it&#8217;\u2013 brings 125 women scientists into classrooms and other gatherings as role models for young learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program, launched by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/4\/d0ae44c93ee48b91de9ba8ff3210874e473c26211320787cf3f42693c2e08a04?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/strong><\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/5\/16e72ef30c92e8e46fdc765f4a3ac09ad231a764e0659464f9009409651fbe28?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Lyda Hill Philanthropies<\/strong>,<\/a>\u00a0makes its ambassadors and their work available to classrooms, media and educational partners. Goulet is the only IF\/THEN Ambassador from Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Whether it&#8217;s the STEM that creates the popular arts that we love through film and animation or the audience itself, science is a big part of Comic-Con,&#8221; said <strong>Samantha Wynns<\/strong>, director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/6\/6d1219b2fbf6ad88d81bba10f1b1aee1a712cd875758c2eac749fd8bf490a26c?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The EcoLogik Institute<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and IF\/THEN Ambassador. The audience had tons of questions; they really got into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There was a woman at the end, and she came up to me and said she&#8217;s currently in the military and that she&#8217;s thinking of getting a degree in biology. So, we got to talk through that, and it was a really amazing experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such interactions \u2013 where people interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics can speak directly to experts in the field \u2013 are a key to getting the public engaged, Wynns said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;At Comic-Con, we&#8217;re reminded that there are a lot of people who don&#8217;t have access to scientists, and they&#8217;re so pumped to be there and to ask their burning questions,&#8221; she said. &#8220;There were lines quite literally around the block and around the convention center to get into these panels.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ambassadors also set up tables at the nearby San Diego&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/12\/e2eb246a3153a178820a5c9fdf1661a4c65cd341b42dfe3b23474754499cd075?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fleet Science Center,<\/a>&nbsp;where Goulet talked about the real-life version of comic-book famous symbiotes such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/13\/a76ece40da4dddcc2a835220b9e29e650e9dbfd38d9026c50635d277d857e80e?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carnage and Venom<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s so much of nature in science fiction,&#8221; Goulet said. &#8220;People are creative, but they usually borrow. Symbiotes are something that sci-fi borrowed from actual science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So, I had the children come up with their own symbiotic character \u2013 with powers and everything \u2013 but that was a way for me to introduce symbiosis, the real symbiosis, to them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group also attended\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/14\/2c0aa5132399146e150d1c1814ba3865897c9804598f33ca9171a5fffb555638?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Nerd Nite San Diego<\/strong><\/a>, where some of the ambassadors gave five-minute presentations on their areas of research. Each outing was designed to make STEM more approachable to a broad audience, Goulet said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you can relate science to people \u2013 to what people love \u2013 then it&#8217;s not as intimidating,&#8221; Goulet said. &#8220;People may or may not know about symbiosis, but they know these characters. So, that&#8217;s how we introduce them to the science.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visiting Comic-Con, Nerd Nite, and the Fleet Science Center are just some of the ways that IF\/THEN Ambassadors have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2d81c2034f65499fb938d3486225f1e4\/15\/70cb3d4ca31d748e51b01499ff6406140540b9b76c21afbad878cda4505a9b51?cache_buster=1756660749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brought science to young learners<\/a>.
