{"id":151442,"date":"2025-08-27T14:56:19","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T19:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=151442"},"modified":"2025-08-27T14:56:21","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T19:56:21","slug":"class-of-2029-officially-joins-the-ole-miss-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/class-of-2029-officially-joins-the-ole-miss-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Class of 2029 Officially Joins the Ole Miss Family"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chancellor Glenn Boyce and CBS News&#8217; Conor Knighton encourage students to explore, lead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Class of 2029<\/strong> officially celebrated the start of their journey at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> during Tuesday&#8217;s (August 26, 2025) Fall Convocation at the <strong>Sandy and John Black Pavilion<\/strong> at <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event serves as the initial bookend of students&#8217; <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> career, and university officials were there to welcome and encourage them. Tuesday&#8217;s ceremony marked the 177th time the school welcomed new students into the Ole Miss family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chancellor <strong>Glenn Boyce<\/strong> challenged students to explore new things and leave their mark, or footprints, on the university by living the words of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ef5de33f4947486ab133a4e1fe13a6ca\/1\/c9b591195cfdd98dda7797447d199d56d5c418d9e9b068649995bc9830c53f53?cache_buster=1756315862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>UM Creed<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I challenge you to translate the words of our creed into action,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Absorb them into your character and allow them to embody your conduct here and beyond.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, Boyce shared three guiding principles for new students to remember during their time at Ole Miss:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Your legacy begins now. My challenge is for you to start building.&#8221;Make it matter that you were here. Pursue learning like it&#8217;s the most important thing in your life. I challenge you to make a difference at this university.&#8221;Choose to lead. Ole Miss builds leaders. It&#8217;s what we do.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening&#8217;s keynote speaker, <strong>Emmy<\/strong>-award winning <strong>CBS <\/strong>news correspondent and author <strong>Conor Knighton<\/strong> also shared a legacy of lessons and encouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is the author of the university&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ef5de33f4947486ab133a4e1fe13a6ca\/2\/c3e83a79bbc6ae3c1133d40de94f54aff79f29f63d5405e17a48d867ab0f05fa?cache_buster=1756315862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0<strong>Common Reading Experience<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0book, &#8220;Leave Only Footprints: My Acadia-to-Zion Journey Through Every National Park&#8221; (<strong>Crown\/Penguin Random House<\/strong>, 2020). In it, he recounts his new beginning and lessons learned from his yearlong adventure to the national parks following the end of his engagement to his fiance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All entering freshmen and transfer students received a copy of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Everyone does a commencement to mark the end of your time in college, but not every university has gathering like this, which you are invited to celebrate in the beginning,&#8221; Knighton said. &#8220;Beginnings are full of promise and possibility, and they are also a little bit more under our control than our endings.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginnings are also a celebration of choice, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You chose to attend this university,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And if your future feels uncertain right now, good \u2013 that&#8217;s part of the fun of it. Focus your intention on making your beginning as strong as that can be.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He went on to say students should blaze their own trails through college and in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You can always make your own options, make your own opportunities,&#8221; he said. &#8220;(If) it turns out that the club or organization that you want doesn&#8217;t exist here on campus, then start it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In a park, you&#8217;re supposed to stay on the trail. But in life, you don&#8217;t have to. Sometimes forging your own path can lead to the best of you.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provost Noel Wilkin challenged the class to embrace a lifelong commitment to excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You are setting a course for the future,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You are learning who you are, what you love and where your talents lie. Engage fully, pursue excellence and unleash your full potential.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Olivia Long<\/strong>, a biology major from <strong>Jonesboro, Arkansas<\/strong>, is looking forward to just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Being part of Ole Miss is a privilege and an honor,&#8221; she said. &#8220;You need to be a leader and get the job done.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>Little Yazoo<\/strong>\u00a0native, nursing student <strong>Jamya Ellis<\/strong> summed up the lessons from the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Things might not go the way that you planned them to, but there&#8217;s still a plan for you,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Just to keep going and create your own legacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Marisa C.
