Karli Matthews of Clarksdale to Represent Mississippi at National Competition in Washington, DC<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Karli Matthews<\/strong>, a middle school student at Lee Academy<\/strong> in Clarksdale<\/strong>, has been named Mississippi<\/strong>\u2019s state champion for the National Civics Bee\u00ae.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She will represent the state as one of only 27 finalists at the National Civics Bee Championship<\/strong>, to be held in Washington, DC, November 10\u201311, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s Bee engaged more than 6,000 students from 110 communities across 28 states\u2014uniting parents, educators, business leaders, public officials, and civic organizations to prioritize civics education nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matthews earned her title by crafting a thoughtful and compelling essay on gun safety and its impact on her community and the nation. Her submission proposed a solution grounded in civic virtues and foundational democratic principles. She advanced through local and state competitions with a strong display of civic knowledge, passion for public service, and commitment to community improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Civics Bee is an excellent way to engage and empower students to understand their rights and responsibilities,\u201d said Scott Waller<\/strong>, president and CEO of the Mississippi Economic Council<\/strong>. \u201cIt encourages students to solve real-world problems, take responsibility for change, and actively participate in building stronger communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Civics Bee is a program of The Civic Trust<\/strong>,\u00a0an initiative of the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation<\/strong>. The annual competition aims to strengthen civics education and literacy among middle school students, their families, and their communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matthews now heads to Washington, DC, where she will compete against other state champions from across the country in the national finals this November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
