{"id":150899,"date":"2025-08-04T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=150899"},"modified":"2025-08-03T14:26:01","modified_gmt":"2025-08-03T19:26:01","slug":"classroom-to-chambers-university-of-mississippi-law-school-powers-clerkship-ambitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/classroom-to-chambers-university-of-mississippi-law-school-powers-clerkship-ambitions\/","title":{"rendered":"Classroom to Chambers: University of Mississippi Law School Powers Clerkship Ambitions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Guidance and training help Ole Miss students broaden skills through clerkships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> law students are seizing opportunities to become judicial clerks upon graduation, thanks to the careful tutelage of the school&#8217;s <strong>Career Services Office<\/strong> and the school&#8217;s course offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a judicial clerk, law school graduates spend one or two years working with a judge and are exposed to a variety of legal issues while gaining experience in legal research and writing. The most desirable clerkships are with the federal judiciary due to their limited availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This work is invaluable at strengthening a graduate&#8217;s skills and knowledge, said <strong>Jacorius Williams<\/strong>, a 2022 alumnus from <strong>Biloxi<\/strong>. After graduation, Williams clerked for <strong>Judge Cynthia Norton<\/strong> of the <strong>U.S. Bankruptcy Court<\/strong> for the Western District of <strong>Missouri <\/strong>and is working for <strong>Judge Taylor B. McNeel<\/strong> of the <strong>U.S. District Court<\/strong> for the Southern District of <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This experience gave me a unique perspective and allowed me to see how the process truly works,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I know how the sausage is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I also enhanced my writing, research and analytical skills, but the most important outcome was the lifelong relationships I built.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such federal clerkships have become commonplace for graduates of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/605fc56b7d1f408a8dcf8561042d52f4\/1\/7a88c0f736e1e0a8b5354c368ecc691fdda7e85f7f309df96de6231747857cc3?cache_buster=1754243342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>School of Law<\/strong><\/a>. <em>U.S. News and World Report<\/em> ranked Ole Miss at No. 8 among public law schools with the most graduates in federal clerkships in the first year following graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The success of getting clerkships selected has helped the school capture the attention of potential students. Some even comment it is one of the reasons they consider attending <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong>, said <strong>Cassandra Latimer<\/strong>, director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/605fc56b7d1f408a8dcf8561042d52f4\/2\/0f3a8d251cd2590cb6533ef3e64f42464dcd9158c345aeedf42074fb2146542f?cache_buster=1754243342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Career Services Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The office contacts students&nbsp;immediately upon acceptance to law school, meeting with them during admitted students&#8217; day and during orientation, Latimer said. The staff continues fostering relationships with students through one-on-one meetings early in their first semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;During this time, we get to know students by learning their motivation for attending law school and learning their initial goals,&#8221; Latimer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employment and judicial clerkship opportunities are available to all students. By knowing a student&#8217;s goals and motivation, the Career Services Office adds a personal touch to the law school experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We want to expose them to all the possibilities and opportunities, but we also want to expose them to things they didn&#8217;t know they needed, and sometimes that&#8217;s a judicial clerkship,&#8221; Latimer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams said he was motivated to be a judicial clerk for the unique opportunity it provided to gain insight into the inner workings of litigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I believed that this experience would enhance my abilities as an advocate and legal thinker,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Additionally, I was attracted to the intellectual challenges presented by federal cases, as well as the chance to refine my skills in legal writing, research and analysis.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The career services team was instrumental in his job search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They kept us informed about available opportunities, connected us with relevant alumni and provided valuable advice,&#8221; Williams said. &#8220;I regularly strategized with them on career planning, and we conducted mock interviews to ensure I was well-prepared.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trey Hubner<\/strong>, a third-year law student from <strong>Tulsa, Oklahoma<\/strong>, wanted the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of\u00a0a clerkship to refine his legal skills. Upon graduating in 2026, he will clerk for <strong>Judge Rhesa H. Barksdale<\/strong> of the <strong>U.S. Court of Appeals<\/strong> for the <strong>Fifth Circuit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until then, Hubner plans to take advantage of course offerings to prepare him further for the position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such course at Ole Miss is Legal Writing for Judicial Clerks, created and taught by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/605fc56b7d1f408a8dcf8561042d52f4\/3\/f8f0bfe35419f3e1c577db8434fc8f90dd2c78b9dd057fb6404a45d3e5e68f21?cache_buster=1754243342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Susan Winters<\/strong><\/a>, legal writing professor of practice, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/605fc56b7d1f408a8dcf8561042d52f4\/4\/0f186c33a378c2558cab2fdc037b4f640137b040e4a182f6906a6ff8dca362bb?cache_buster=1754243342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Philip Levy<\/strong><\/a>, adjunct professor and assistant U.S. attorney, who clerked in the Mississippi state and federal court systems, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We recognized a need to provide more focused preparation for students transitioning into these roles (of judicial clerks),&#8221; Winters said. &#8220;In addition to writing, we cover judicial research techniques, ethical considerations unique to clerks and judges and the evolving role of AI in the judicial system.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course provides hands-on learning by having students work through two real-world legal problems and brings in current and former law clerks and judges, all who share their experience with students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The law school has a strong tradition of placing graduates in judicial clerkships in both the state and federal court systems,&#8221; Winters said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We want to build on this success and ensure our students are prepared to contribute from day one in their clerkships.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Marisa C.
