On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, a Lafayette County<\/strong> jury returned guilty verdicts in a 2022 case involving a vehicle crash that resulted in serious injury to a pregnant woman and the death of her unborn child.s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crash occurred on March 6, 2022, on West Jackson Avenue<\/strong> near McDonald\u2019s. Officers with the Oxford Police Department<\/strong> responded to the scene and began a comprehensive investigation. It was determined that Meko Lamar<\/strong> and Tyler Hammond<\/strong> were fleeing in concert, recklessly endangering the public, when their vehicle struck the victim\u2019s car. The victim sustained serious injuries, and her unborn child did not survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a two-day trial, the jury found both Lamar and Hammond guilty of felony fleeing in concert with injury and felony fleeing in concert with death. At sentencing, both defendants received:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 20 years to serve on Count 1 (Fleeing in Concert with Injury), with 5 years of Post-Release Supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 40 years to serve on Count 2 (Fleeing in Concert with Death), with 5 years of Post-Release Supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning both Lamar and Hammond will serve 20 years each in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was a heartbreaking case, and our thoughts remain with the victim and her family,\u201d said Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen<\/strong>. \u201cOur officers worked this scene with precision and care from the very beginning. That thoroughness made all the difference. It\u2019s a reminder that what we do in those first moments\u2014how we document, how we observe, how we follow through\u2014can ultimately bring justice to victims.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case was prosecuted by District Attorney Ben Creekmore<\/strong> and Assistant District Attorney Honey Ussery<\/strong> of the Third Circuit District Attorney\u2019s Office. Their commitment to seeing this case through, in close partnership with our officers and investigators, ensured a strong presentation to the jury and a just outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
