Gupta, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, will spend three months this fall at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/bd84a8382829425797f2899b40ec3683\/3\/b024b315e896769bcfc83a7a45d057900d3766c323966b3790218fc1ef38fbcc?cache_buster=1751994491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Perimeter Institute<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in <strong>Waterloo, Ontario<\/strong>, where she will continue her study of gravitational waves and binary black holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I have visited the Perimeter Institute before, and it looks like you&#8217;re in a different world,&#8221; Gupta said. &#8220;There will be other researchers there and we can talk about our work and look for ways to collaborate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve always wanted to have a distractionless place where I can focus on my research and nothing else, and this fellowship provides that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the fellowship, Gupta will have opportunities to interact with many of the top theorists in the world while researching in &#8220;a cathedral to science,&#8221; said <strong>Leo Stein<\/strong>, associate professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/bd84a8382829425797f2899b40ec3683\/4\/4769942b2dff673d1ad40c5b82d00bef3784aa0b353a328017caf9cc42c0f240?cache_buster=1751994491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">physics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Such fellowships are one of the few ways to recognize and highlight important and often unsung research contributions,&#8221; Stein said. &#8220;We&#8217;re not in science for any fame, but it&#8217;s great to know that the broader physics community agrees: Professor Gupta is doing very important research.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since joining the <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> faculty in 2020, Gupta has contributed to numerous publications on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/bd84a8382829425797f2899b40ec3683\/5\/721cd7e234ed49b36f784ea8230e2a7fc69f8fac7cf7ad87df9d02562abd7533?cache_buster=1751994491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">binary black holes<\/a>, orbiting pairs of black holes caught in each other&#8217;s gravitational pull, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/bd84a8382829425797f2899b40ec3683\/6\/b5984bc960d8c1318b33fc881dace7e5fdb456021e94c40655eb0e5b507a4a0f?cache_buster=1751994491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gravitational waves<\/a>, the ripples in space-time that black holes make when they collide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists first detected g<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/bd84a8382829425797f2899b40ec3683\/7\/6ccb109ada88376d146a4c39b99232caa650d13f6f9717fbb2ab40fd054d9dd0?cache_buster=1751994491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ravitational waves on Sept. 14, 2015,<\/a>\u00a0100 years after <strong>Albert Einstein<\/strong> first predicted them in his 1915 general theory of relativity. The research team included several Ole Miss faculty members and graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was so proud to be a part of that discovery, because I was a fresh postdoc at the time,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Now, we&#8217;re going to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of that discovery this fall and we&#8217;re still studying them. We&#8217;re still learning.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her stay at the Perimeter Institute, Gupta will research ways that extreme physics in black hole mergers and the resulting gravitational waves could test Einstein&#8217;s theory of relativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are few things which Einstein&#8217;s theory cannot explain, which made us believe that Einstein&#8217;s theory is not perfect,&#8221; she said. &#8220;So that&#8217;s what we are trying to do; we are trying to test his theory using gravitational waves.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If physicists can show that space-time behaves in ways Einstein&#8217;s theory doesn&#8217;t predict, it could open the door to new physics.
