{"id":150292,"date":"2025-07-02T21:44:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T02:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=150292"},"modified":"2025-07-02T21:44:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T02:44:11","slug":"university-museum-leader-reflects-on-13-years-of-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/university-museum-leader-reflects-on-13-years-of-service\/","title":{"rendered":"University Museum Leader Reflects on 13 Years of Service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saarnio championed access, acquisitions and education during 13 years as director<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Clara Turnage<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Robert Saarnio<\/strong>, longtime director of the <strong>University of Mississippi Museum<\/strong>, is retiring after 13 years of dedicated service to history, art, and education at <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Saarnio joined the university in 2012, he was drawn by the unique opportunity to head both the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b018c6385edf4662a711c0291e1c9a38\/1\/6a624f1d07d61a165a2c7eda7d149a601a57250e6defbf7ed7273f8f031208c5?cache_buster=1751043071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UM Museum<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b018c6385edf4662a711c0291e1c9a38\/2\/b21dca3df1d535dabc752b29dc153362eefd704cff54b3ce04a9fd9c0e1322bd?cache_buster=1751043071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Rowan Oak<\/strong>,<\/a>\u00a0Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner&#8217;s home. He was also intrigued by the extensive collections of art, scientific equipment, and antiquities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it was the people of the campus and town who made him stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I just fell in love with Oxford,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This community embraced me. The university embraced me. The town embraced me. It&#8217;s been an honor and a privilege to serve this place.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his tenure as director, the museum has made multiple notable acquisitions and ranked among both&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b018c6385edf4662a711c0291e1c9a38\/3\/c0b629f5d90648499d3f222cc2cbcfa1222e6d1d9152b6dbc436c1cd9195cf69?cache_buster=1751043071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EDsmart<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b018c6385edf4662a711c0291e1c9a38\/4\/9de590ee8c4dae3ef8bb92367cec1696a5e7d2b7432a828a427a354aeae1b67b?cache_buster=1751043071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College Rank<\/a>&#8216;s top university museums in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Robert has advanced the stature of our museum and historic homes, which has improved the way that they serve our community and campus,&#8221; Provost<strong> Noel Wilkin<\/strong> said. &#8220;His approach to draw people to the museum using its holdings and hosting significant exhibitions made the museum more visible and expanded the community&#8217;s access to great works of art.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first things Saarnio did, however, was make sure the museum was a place of welcome for its community. In 2013, he implemented a free admission policy, ensuring that all students, faculty, staff, and community members could access the museum&#8217;s art and education programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Museums serve several functions,&#8221; Saarnio said. &#8220;They&#8217;re gathering places, places of generating visual literacy and creative inspiration. They are places of knowledge, and there should be no barrier to accessing that knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s why we made admission free: to say to our community, &#8216;You are all welcome.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of resources available for that community has grown under Saarnio&#8217;s guidance, too. Photo by Srijita Chattopadhyay\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Saarnio and museum curator <strong>Melanie Antonelli <\/strong>also oversaw a broad digitization effort, making the museum&#8217;s art, antiquities, and scientific instruments, and historical artifacts available to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s another form of access,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Whether it&#8217;s scholars in Berlin or children in the community, anybody can access our collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We still have a long way to go (to digitize the full collection), but I think we&#8217;ve built an incredibly strong and talented staff in the process.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before joining the Ole Miss staff, Saarnio served as the deputy director of the<strong> Honolulu Academy of Arts<\/strong>, associate director of the <strong>Doris Duke Foundation<\/strong> in <strong>Shangri La<\/strong> and as the director of museums at <strong>Johns Hopkins University<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In all of my career, I&#8217;ve never seen a staff of this size be this productive in serving the community, serving the campus, developing exhibitions and being stewards of this collection,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The team I get to work with is skilled, talented, scary smart, and, most of all, fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This museum is 86 years old, and I can say for a fact that this is the strongest team we&#8217;ve had.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of this work would have been possible without an &#8220;ecosystem of support&#8221; from the provost&#8217;s office and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b018c6385edf4662a711c0291e1c9a38\/6\/d7011a7951a6360e362a0079ed816b8d0eb650d928d5be85a84cc03334512a0b?cache_buster=1751043071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Friends of the Museum<\/strong>,<\/a>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is incredibly rare to have a university that so well supports and understand the need for the kind of work that we do,&#8221; Saarnio said. &#8220;I call it an ecosystem because it&#8217;s not one person, it&#8217;s the provost and the chancellor and the Friends of the Museum and deans, and the list goes on and on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;All of that created an environment that kept me here and kept this museum growing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following his retirement on Monday (June 30), Saarnio plans to travel and to continue serving on the board of directors of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b018c6385edf4662a711c0291e1c9a38\/7\/c8fea2c9d9e2586431a764ab5482e4ee3a2cdd42d11588f4216cf7317b243f8c?cache_buster=1751043071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Association of Academic Museums and Galleries<\/a>. Most importantly, he plans to stay in the community that welcomed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Like I said, it&#8217;s been an honor and a privilege to serve this place, and that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m not leaving Oxford,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I would not leave this wonderful town.
