On Friday, May 30, 2025, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office<\/strong> responded to Baptist Memorial Hospital<\/strong> in Oxford, Mississippi<\/strong>, to take a report of a one-year-old child who had several unexplained injuries. Due to the severity of the injuries, the child was transported to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital<\/strong> in Memphis, Tennessee<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the unexplained serious injuries, a follow-up investigation was launched. After a thorough investigation, Uriel Cruz<\/strong> (26 years old, Hispanic male, Lafayette County Resident) and Teresa Mendez<\/strong> (25 years old, Hispanic female, Lafayette County Resident) were formally charged with two counts of Felony Child Abuse each. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, June 2, 2025, Cruz and Mendez were brought before the Lafayette County Court<\/strong> for an initial appearance. The district attorney’s office filed a motion to deny bond, and a Bond Hearing will be held at a later date. Cruz and Mendez will remain in the custody of the Lafayette County Detention Center until the hearing is completed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
