{"id":149550,"date":"2025-05-28T22:18:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T03:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=149550"},"modified":"2025-05-28T21:32:02","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T02:32:02","slug":"biology-faculty-member-honored-as-ole-miss-online-instructor-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/biology-faculty-member-honored-as-ole-miss-online-instructor-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Biology Faculty Member Honored as Ole Miss Online Instructor of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Lydia Lytal named Paragon Award winner for 2024\u201325<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Pam Starling<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0The <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>&#8216;s<strong> Office of Academic Outreach<\/strong> has honored biology professor <strong>Lydia Lytal<\/strong>&#8216;s efforts to create and lead an online laboratory science class by awarding her its <strong>Paragon Award for Excellence in Distance Teaching<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lytal, an instructional assistant professor of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/7cdcf600e13a4d81925731ac80657054\/1\/2b164dfb1484deca7cd72680b1231bcb633fe00c3e7e9158f7af7e9c4e5fe485?cache_buster=1747937273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biology<\/a>, crafted an online learning experience for BISC 103: An Inquiry Into Life, the first online lab course offered at Ole Miss. This course accompanies the BISC 102: Human Biology lecture course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the best ways to teach science is to do science, and that can be challenging in an online environment,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lytal worked to create teachable moments that were interactive and engaging by providing hands-on learning opportunities for students, even in an online course format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Traditionally, labs at UM have not been offered online, so I knew I had to think outside of the box,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I wanted to make sure that students could complete the labs outside of a traditional laboratory space, supplies didn&#8217;t cost very much, and that students could learn with each assignment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lytal&#8217;s online course stood out due to the nature of a lab course, said Wan Petchroon, an instructional designer and training specialist with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/7cdcf600e13a4d81925731ac80657054\/2\/48a83e0fd9ad144c4862eac27ea6f449cb8ddd2a2b4a607345e4a6e38188d807?cache_buster=1747937273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of Academic Outreach<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The material is inherently more difficult to adapt to an online setting, yet Dr. Lytal did an exceptional job,&#8221; Petchroon said. &#8220;She is passionate about teaching and providing outstanding online student experiences as shown through her course design, assignment variety and the interactivity of her course.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One vital element for a successful online course is good communication between the instructor and students, Lytal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I start off with an introduction video to help reduce anxiety for students who may have never taken a lab course online,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It lets the students know that they can be successful in this course and gives them the opportunity to learn about my personality and teaching style.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each module is listed by week with a clear title, a description, and a visual cue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the challenges of online teaching is getting a student through the work independently,&#8221; Lytal said. &#8220;I want to give students a shot at being successful and giving them the right tools and the right direction at the start of each module is so important in an online class.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One student in the class said the course&#8217;s structure was helpful for keeping on track with assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I really enjoyed how organized each assignment was,&#8221; the student said. &#8220;Our teacher provided step-by-step instructions that were simple to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lydia-w-trophy-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lydia-w-trophy-768x1024.jpg?resize=640%2C853&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-149553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lydia-w-trophy-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lydia-w-trophy-scaled.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lydia-w-trophy-scaled.jpg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lydia-w-trophy-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lydia-w-trophy-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C1365&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lydia-w-trophy-scaled.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lydia-w-trophy-scaled.jpg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lydia Lytal shows off her trophy for this year&#8217;s Paragon Award for Excellence in Distance Teaching. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes online courses can be set aside or confusing if the Blackboard page is unorganized, but I did not feel like that was the case in this class.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the new weekly class module is available for students to view, Lytal sends an email with an introduction to the week&#8217;s assignments along with encouraging words for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t want students to see a module without instructions from me verbally,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I know this course can be difficult for some students, so I use announcements on Blackboard Ultra and various visual cues to help alleviate any anxiety that students may have when taking a science course.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/7cdcf600e13a4d81925731ac80657054\/3\/f5687fcd6a8352017939aca0791d88bb75b0c6c12b6ababdaeab81bb022c7a84?cache_buster=1747937273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paragon Award<\/a>&nbsp;criteria include successful online course design, innovative use of technology, and a commitment to the student experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In science especially, sometimes we discuss more complicated subjects, like DNA,&#8221; Lytal said. &#8220;You can&#8217;t see the molecules of DNA without a microscope, and online students may not have one on hand, so I found virtual labs where students could still view magnified specimens, manipulate an experiment and analyze data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Some students told me that these are their favorite labs of the week because they&#8217;re so interactive. And interactive assignments are some of the most successful practices you can offer for students in online courses.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lytal shared her award-winning teaching techniques with fellow faculty this year as one of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/7cdcf600e13a4d81925731ac80657054\/4\/b2f7427cd768122627bac97d8a76780ac5782b73821b763c3539a15930778432?cache_buster=1747937273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ole Miss Online<\/a>&#8216;s WOW! Faculty Fellows.
