Our kids are finally done with school, and it\u2019s time to plan for summer vacation. You don\u2019t have to go very far to have a fun afternoon adventure with your kids or grandkids. Gardening is a great afternoon adventure, and your backyard is the perfect place to have little fun. Take a trip to the garden store let them pick out flowers to plant in a patio container!\u00a0Tomatoes are a great choice!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>June Landscape Checklist<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Planting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plant crape myrtles in bloom to be sure of their color. <a href=\"http:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/publications\/publications\/crapemyrtle-flower-the-south\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Extension Publication 2007, \u201cCrapemyrtle \u2013 Flower of the South.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant warm-season grasses: Bermuda, centipede, zoysia, and St. Augustine (June to August).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replace turf in deep shade with ground cover: liriope, ajuga, vinca, or pachysandra.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summer annuals: ageratum, cockscomb, impatiens, marigolds, sunflowers, four-o\u2019clocks, and periwinkle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant tomatoes late this month to ensure harvest late into fall. Cherry tomatoes and Bella Rosa varieties are good choices for heat tolerance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select daylilies in bloom for planting in your garden.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant zinnias and marigolds now for a second crop of flowers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gladiolus planted now will give lovely fall blooms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fertilizing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fertilize all ornamental shrubs\/trees and annuals\/perennials with a slow-release fertilizer. For more information check out this <a href=\"http:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/information-sheets\/is0411.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fertilizing ornamental trees and shrubs information sheet<\/a>!\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fertilize camellias with azalea-camellia fertilizer if not done earlier in the year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fertilize tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini monthly with 5-10-10<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pest Control<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scout the landscape\/garden regularly for pests and treat as needed. <a href=\"http:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/publications\/insect-pests-the-home-vegetable-garden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Insect Pests of the Home Vegetable Garden<\/a>\u00a0 (Extension Publication 2347) is a great resource, providing detail on the many insects you will encounter during growing season.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove zinnias with powdery mildew and replant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pruning<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prune oleanders after blooming ends<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pinch dahlias and mums to ensure a compact growth habit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove blackberry fruiting canes after harvest. Prune new canes to encourage side branching. For more information about growing blackberries, read\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/publications\/establishing-home-fruit-orchard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Extension Publication 3410, \u201cEstablishing a Home Fruit Orchard,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/publications\/chilling-hour-requirements-fruit-crops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Extension Publication 3067, \u201cChilling-Hour Requirements for Fruit Crops,\u201d\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/publications\/information-sheets\/fruit-and-nut-review-blackberries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Extension Information Sheet 1444, \u201cFruit and Nut Review \u2013 Blackberries.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove faded flowers from daisies, daylilies, and other summer flowers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blooming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chinese parasols, golden raintrees, cletheras, and catalpas. Ageratum, balloon flowers, bee balm, begonias, butterfly weeds, coreopsis, cornflowers, gladiolus, hollyhocks, nicotianas, petunias, phlox, scabiosas, Shasta daisies, verbenas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re going out of town for vacation, remember to ask a neighbor to water your plants while you\u2019re gone!
