{"id":149368,"date":"2025-05-20T14:15:52","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T19:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=149368"},"modified":"2025-05-20T14:15:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T19:15:57","slug":"university-hosting-2025-mississippi-boys-state-and-girls-state-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/university-hosting-2025-mississippi-boys-state-and-girls-state-program\/","title":{"rendered":"University Hosting 2025 Mississippi Boys State and Girls State Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Weeklong programs give participants hands-on leadership and citizenship training<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Jordan Karnbach<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mississippi&#8217;s future leaders will come to the <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> campus this summer when the school hosts the 2025 sessions of the<strong> American Legion Auxiliary Girls State<\/strong> and the <strong>American Legion Boys State<\/strong> programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/739037d68a3648648526a45b53766dc2\/1\/aae68df3a3c0ea859e1b6f14a6c99698353cced8d5a0642d31a44e70267a07bd?cache_buster=1747415912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boys State<\/a>\u00a0will be held May 25-31, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/739037d68a3648648526a45b53766dc2\/2\/076c1d6f95de850a26022ca465204c9bc4b86b70c3a1753d0866955666b33d5f?cache_buster=1747415912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Girls State<\/a>\u00a0will take place June 8-13. Both weeklong programs provide rising high school seniors with immersive experiences in citizenship, leadership, and government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants in each program create and manage their own mock municipalities, where they elect leaders, draft legislation, and address real-world community challenges. By the end of the week, students gain firsthand experience in how local and state governments function and how they can actively engage in their own communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Since 1947, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/739037d68a3648648526a45b53766dc2\/3\/5735304f3c3162aa96ba7fdd8a074df781686288a46f0fdee2ed9e7d18f6928e?cache_buster=1747415912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Legion Auxiliary&#8217;s Girls State<\/a>\u00a0program has evolved alongside our participants,&#8221; said <strong>Angela Kilcrease<\/strong>, an auxiliary member and director of the <strong>Magnolia Girls State<\/strong> program. &#8220;We continue to model our leadership program after our state&#8217;s form of government, with a focus on good citizenship, self-confidence, and civic awareness.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programs adapt each year to reflect participants&#8217; growing awareness and the shifting political climate, Kilcrease said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Delegates hear from influential speakers, write and pass bills on issues important to them, and engage deeply with the legislative process,&#8221; she said. &#8220;While the foundation of the program remains the same, we continue to raise the bar in inspiring these young women to grow in civic awareness and leadership.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>Cait Mayo<\/strong>, a Girls State staffer and freshman public policy leadership major from Oxford, the program&#8217;s impact extends beyond the weeklong session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think the most meaningful part of the week was the connections I made,&#8221; Mayo said. &#8220;I still keep in touch with the girls from my city and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re my friends and my peers\u2014in my sorority, in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/739037d68a3648648526a45b53766dc2\/4\/408a5dee87db36b55a69b44fe551c6830c0da77624260e083bba7ca0d2a187dc?cache_buster=1747415912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Lott Institute<\/strong><\/a>, and in other high-achieving majors here at Ole Miss and other schools. These are people I can depend on and learn from.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/739037d68a3648648526a45b53766dc2\/5\/825381826a6d3416130f1f5b12709c160aa476411919004707bdbbd113e797eb?cache_buster=1747415912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mississippi Boys State<\/a>&nbsp;offers a similar hands-on opportunity for young men to explore the workings of state government and develop leadership skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mississippi Boys State inspires young men to stay engaged in civic life beyond their time in the program by offering a dynamic, immersive experience that brings government and leadership to life,&#8221; said <strong>Michael Coleman<\/strong>, media lead for Mississippi American Legion Boys State. &#8220;Throughout the week, participants campaign, hold elections, make laws, and hone their public speaking skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants are grouped into mock cities and political parties, where they collaborate to form governments, create laws, and address community challenges.
