{"id":149173,"date":"2025-05-12T16:37:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T21:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=149173"},"modified":"2025-05-12T11:51:39","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T16:51:39","slug":"veteran-communicator-tapped-to-lead-university-marketing-communications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/veteran-communicator-tapped-to-lead-university-marketing-communications\/","title":{"rendered":"Veteran Communicator Tapped to Lead University Marketing, Communications"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Lisa Stone to take on leadership role after nearly 30 years at Ole Miss<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Clara Turnage<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>University of Mississippi <\/strong>has named <strong>Lisa Stone<\/strong>, a trusted leader who has shaped the university&#8217;s communications for nearly three decades, as its vice chancellor for marketing and communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stone, who has served as interim vice chancellor since September 2024, will start July 1, pending approval from the Institutions of Higher Learning board of trustees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For nearly three decades, Lisa Stone has been a valued member of our campus community,&#8221; <strong>Chancellor Glenn Boyce<\/strong> said. &#8220;She has led award-winning communications campaigns, managed major initiatives, developed purposeful communication strategies, and built strong stakeholder relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Lisa&#8217;s thoughtful leadership and collaborative approach will have a meaningful impact on our marketing and communications efforts across our university. She demonstrates her deep passion and commitment for Ole Miss in all that she does, and I&#8217;m delighted to welcome her to our senior leadership team as vice chancellor for marketing and communications.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before serving as interim vice chancellor, Stone spent seven years as director of strategic communications in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/fe353b10e5c54a77a42ac59433967595\/1\/ba0b7d98ad725e6650aaa283d2e47df8d51f9be5eac2f2c6df5109c98a1677c9?cache_buster=1746719392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Marketing and Communications.<\/a>\u00a0She led university-wide messaging, guided crisis communications, and strengthened the institution&#8217;s public profile and communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As vice chancellor, Stone will take the lead in guiding the university&#8217;s internal and external communications, shaping its public image, and coordinating its integrated marketing efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The impact of marketing and communications is visible across every corner of this campus,&#8221; Stone said. &#8220;From news stories and social media posts to websites and branding, each of our talented Marcomm team members has their fingerprints indelibly cemented in the successes of this very special place.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stone&#8217;s immediate focus is building on the university&#8217;s existing momentum. She plans to do that by challenging her team to innovate and take creative risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our role is to make people aware of the tremendous education and opportunities that exist here, so that they can build successful lives and have an impact on the world around them,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Ole Miss has experienced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/fe353b10e5c54a77a42ac59433967595\/2\/3e88c4a84aae0c6fc1a8d2e2fc3f10749c2c5f1324443392368c5acb409c645f?cache_buster=1746719392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multiple record enrollments in recent years<\/a>, higher education nationally is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/fe353b10e5c54a77a42ac59433967595\/3\/2a0cac10dbbf77b8b0a2a943d1e4da89238ae713b0ecd408a1c83206b411622d?cache_buster=1746719392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">facing a looming enrollment cliff<\/a>. Stone is charged with leading the university&#8217;s marketing and communications strategy through that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan Whittington, assistant vice chancellor for marketing, has worked alongside Stone for nearly a decade. He said no one is better suited for the position than her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When I think of the person who best reflects our university&#8217;s personality, I think of Lisa Stone,&#8221; Whittington said. &#8220;Her commitment to \u2013 and passion for \u2013 our university, our brand, and our people is second to none.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her career, Stone has held\u00a0leadership positions across several NASA and NOAA grant-funded statewide collaborations. There, she provided management, planning, and communications for academic, research,\u00a0and economic development\u00a0activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her nine years in marketing and communications, Stone pioneered the award-winning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/fe353b10e5c54a77a42ac59433967595\/4\/0fdaa1ba7436448a594eed08bcb7b3f480b2bb5b8ae4fca1a4f3a511939e6196?cache_buster=1746719392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Journey to Commencement<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0campaign as well as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/fe353b10e5c54a77a42ac59433967595\/5\/c706161a1952ea05618bcbad3646ef9e20460d24a339b0bcf013b68e8190fc6f?cache_buster=1746719392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60th Anniversary of Integration commemoration<\/a>, which won a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/fe353b10e5c54a77a42ac59433967595\/6\/850c8cb36a0246280e81f3836ffeef05dd9d159cc7b78dda4923964a19a1b296?cache_buster=1746719392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 CASE Circle of Excellence Silver award<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the COVID-19 pandemic, Stone took a leading role in helping the university communicate safety protocols, best practices, and recommendations from health professionals to the campus and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also leads communications for Encompass, a multi-year, campuswide initiative to update the university&#8217;s systems that house human resources, payroll, financial data, and student information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Stone first joined the university staff in 1993, she intended to spend three years in Oxford while her husband, Adam, was in law school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But this place, it just gets hold of you,&#8221; she said. &#8220;For me, it&#8217;s always been about being a part of something that&#8217;s so much bigger than you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This place touches so many people, and I get to be a part of it. I love what I do, and I&#8217;ve never had a desire to work anywhere else.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite living across the state \u2013 from the Gulf Coast to Jackson to Oxford \u2013 she never left Ole Miss. Her three children \u2013 A.J., Sara, and Benjamin \u2013 have witnessed this dedication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My mom has worked for Ole Miss for longer than I&#8217;ve been alive,&#8221; Sara Stone said. &#8220;Ole Miss means so much to her.
