Instead, she walked out as the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>&#8216;s 20th <strong>Harry S. Truman Scholar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boyce surprised the junior with the news on April 10. Unbeknownst to Ware, her mother, father and younger brother, who traveled from their hometown of <strong>Madison<\/strong>, were waiting in Boyce&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You have so much to be proud of,&#8221; Boyce told <strong>Dr. Terrance Ware<\/strong> and <strong>Zandrea Ware<\/strong>, Yasmine&#8217;s parents. &#8220;You have an amazing daughter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winners were formally announced April 18, 2025, by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/1\/2e18e236e86915795a911ce3a6bc99363aa32eecc66b07c115ea00f20184b054?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation<\/strong><\/a>. Established as a tribute to the 33rd U.S. president, the foundation awards merit-based scholarships annually to students dedicated to careers in government or public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from Boyce and her family, <strong>Whitney Dedmon-Woods<\/strong>, assistant director of the Office of National Scholarship Advisement; <strong>Fred Slabach<\/strong>, dean of the <strong>School of Law<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>&#8216;s first Truman Scholar; and <strong>Christian Boudreaux<\/strong>, the university&#8217;s 2024 Truman Scholar, all came to the chancellor&#8217;s office to support Ware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know what to say,&#8221; Yasmine Ware said, wiping tears from her eyes. &#8220;Thank you so much to all of you. This has been a stressful process, but in such a wonderful and rewarding way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t have done it without you.&nbsp;I cannot overstate how much this means to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ware is an interdisciplinary studies major with concentrations in international studies, Chinese and global security. Over the last three years, she has interned in Congress, studied abroad with the United Nations and researched Japanese heritage in <strong>Kyoto, Japan<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was awarded as a Model United Nations delegate at international conferences in <strong>New York City<\/strong> and <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On campus, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/2\/b61270b53cb30de3a4fb0eeb49c34edabbfb4f989a983eeb549d7cdc3a00c404?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stamps Scholar<\/a>\u00a0serves as president of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/3\/d02392164ac011b9bc6633723c4177be263bce2c498cf3f2fca858d47b527f86?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Undergraduate Black Law Student Association<\/strong>,<\/a>\u00a0served in the <strong>Associated Student Body<\/strong> president&#8217;s cabinet and is one of 30 students chosen campuswide to in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/4\/4cb75ee9ba0adf675f7fecffffa0d17f118b3493e72dfeb2008fe9003849ffaf?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Columns Society<\/strong>.<\/a>\u00a0She&#8217;s also served on the senate of both ASB and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/5\/76035517ee784dfbb0ae2cc502b1e11b8397b9d2870dbb886791849d89f0f74f?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through her studies and extracurriculars, the Madison native has focused on elevating the stories of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ware produces an award-winning podcast,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/6\/c12cfbb2caccc7a4dbdac39666c5b96293acf5beac97c78122ee9503e9b1ef0d?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Yasmine&#8217;s Warehouse&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and through this role was invited to the White House as Press and won\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/7\/c615476545dae4321ef0b4128602a0be2ca1a074f16b42287bda8c5cfb8fe6fe?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/strong><\/a>&#8216; Fourth Annual Student Podcast Contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/8\/0bc15e15acbf7046c06b7e056c91c09b986c1655442180c99f841a859d1077ed?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the inaugural recipient of the James H. Meredith Community Transformation Award<\/a>, which helped fund her documentary,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/9\/e781d2f61fdf55f3fa1462e00033f473846533d120664928fceaa4cbbd428be1?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;The Mound Bayou Memoirs,&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;telling the story of one of America&#8217;s first all-African American towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Those experiences combined really inspired me to want to work in the security sector, but specifically finding ways to tell stories as well,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I see myself eventually working for the United Nations, specifically UNESCO, so that we can work to secure peace and build peace using cultural heritage as an avenue.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ware was selected among 700 applicants nationwide for the scholarship. She will receive up to $30,000 toward completing her graduate degree and will gain access to internship and employment opportunities in the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She plans to use her Truman Scholarship to apply to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2fe6d870a4044a18a5c08c7ca983821a\/10\/f8b994e78605bfacd4800faf0ebeb89a143ebd5832bf600cf689f84d1eb493fe?cache_buster=1745002111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Harvard Law School<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0with a goal of earning her Juris Doctor and a master&#8217;s degree in public administration and international development. Ware was got a firsthand look at to Harvard&#8217;s legal programs after presenting her research at the law school in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They have the Mississippi Delta Project, which means I&#8217;d be able to do pro bono work in the Delta,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s one of the reasons I want to go to law school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d get a phenomenal education, but I&#8217;d also get to give back to the community that has inspired me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked where she got her passion for making change in Mississippi, Yasmine turned her gaze to her parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My parents and my family are my everything,&#8221; she said, leaning against her brother, Jacob, 11. &#8220;From a young age, I knew that Mississippi was my community.
