{"id":148784,"date":"2025-04-29T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=148784"},"modified":"2025-04-28T13:37:32","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T18:37:32","slug":"fifteen-ole-miss-students-win-stamps-impact-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/fifteen-ole-miss-students-win-stamps-impact-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifteen Ole Miss Students Win Stamps Impact Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Undergraduates receive funding support through competitive award program<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fifteen students are receiving a funding boost for academic and creative projects exploring genetic research, electric vehicle batteries and more as the fourth cohort of <strong>Stamps Impact Prize<\/strong> recipients at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b0688400d28d4cbd8fe1c6ab9e5e34c3\/1\/be663bee4c0c5b8a3b38ac02d7a94c6617e469651ffdc5ad0075c1317a98ec47?cache_buster=1745515061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">created the competitive award<\/a>&nbsp;in fall 2023 to enhance undergraduate students&#8217; academic experience by supporting innovative, faculty-supported endeavors beyond the classroom. Each student receives up to $5,000 to support their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provost <strong>Noel Wilkin<\/strong> announced the spring 2025 recipients on April 15, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This year&#8217;s awarded undergraduate projects are impressive,&#8221; Wilkin said. &#8220;It reinforces the fact that our undergraduate students are making contributions to knowledge in their areas while earning their degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It also highlights the fact that our faculty and their willingness to work with undergraduates as they test out their ideas, makes this an amazing community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 15 awardees represent a variety of fields, including public health, psychology, music and computer science. Here is a look at the recipients and their projects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jana Abuirshaid, of Southaven, a junior majoring in public health and Arabic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maria Fernanda Argote de la Torre, of San Andres Cholula, Puebla, Mexico, a junior biomedical engineering major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Darryl Bonds, of Flowood, a junior psychology major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emma Broemmer, of Leesburg, Virginia, a junior psychology major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Benton Donahue, of Madison, a junior music education major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>John Griffith of Charlotte, North Carolina, a junior mechanical engineering major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ann Grigsby, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, a senior studio art major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sydney Guntharp, of Hernando, a senior majoring in English and political science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jacob King, of Canton, a junior biochemistry major\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lindsey McGee, of Chesterfield, Missouri, a junior mechanical engineering major\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Camille Newman, of Pass Christian, a junior mechanical engineering major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compton Ross, of Madison, a junior majoring in computer science and mathematics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jackson Sevin, of New Orleans, a junior psychology major\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Katherine Tibbs, of Gulfport, a junior exercise science major\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abi Turner, of Suwanee, Georgia, a junior elementary education major.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Turner was selected for her project focused on producing code-switching literature, or books primarily written in one language that switch to another. Her faculty mentor is Kristina Livingston, assistant professor of elementary education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fellow in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b0688400d28d4cbd8fe1c6ab9e5e34c3\/2\/520a06cf0678cea890d3c4c3777a848c1e1941e9275187deafa1b4601a57ae15?cache_buster=1745515061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mississippi Excellence in Teaching<\/a>&nbsp;program, Turner has focused her research on bilingual literacy, and the support from this award will help her take action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really trying to make an impact in the education community and community as a whole because there really aren&#8217;t a lot of bilingual books that are code-switching for both English and Spanish or that are about a variety of different topics,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Being able to write and release books and research that I&#8217;ve found on this topic with support and not having to fund it myself definitely helps me achieve something that I&#8217;ve worked so hard and dreamt of doing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through her thesis and coursework, Turner said she has witnessed and identified barriers of bilingual literacy. She wants to help remove those to help all students thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Bilingualism isn&#8217;t something that should be seen as a disadvantage,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It should be seen as something that is an advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Bilingual literature gives every student the opportunity to have that advantage.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>E. Roe Stamps and his family gave the university a $100,000 renewable gift in 2023, which the university matched to create the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b0688400d28d4cbd8fe1c6ab9e5e34c3\/3\/06b5dbacf6c7c13ac4bfd684dfd37d3f4f0a49e4ee829a0a1d9206c58891078a?cache_buster=1745515061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stamps Impact Prize<\/a>. Thirteen students received the inaugural awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The support for these enterprising student projects enriches their academic experience while also advancing a variety of research, program director Kenneth Sufka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Stamps Impact Prizes awarded in our spring cycle represent an array of high quality,&nbsp;student-initiated&nbsp;research, creative achievement and community service projects across a wide range of academic disciplines,&#8221; said Sufka, distinguished professor of psychology and pharmacology&nbsp;and research professor in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b0688400d28d4cbd8fe1c6ab9e5e34c3\/4\/9184b3f04c0a9e42e8a6bb7974d2ff13e5974db8cf5f345be0be2eb9eced4bec?cache_buster=1745515061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to support these faculty-mentored undergraduate experiences as our students address important issues in science, culture and society.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b0688400d28d4cbd8fe1c6ab9e5e34c3\/5\/7c0732bf10a3cb07157c82012c748c406921bdc111498ce0dbb6ae8c18a24349?cache_buster=1745515061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">application portal<\/a>&nbsp;for the fall semester opens Oct. 1.
