{"id":148744,"date":"2025-04-28T12:45:18","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T17:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=148744"},"modified":"2025-04-28T12:45:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T17:45:20","slug":"reconstructing-faulkner-project-digitizes-authors-personal-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/reconstructing-faulkner-project-digitizes-authors-personal-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Reconstructing Faulkner: Project Digitizes Author&#8217;s Personal Library"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Library, Rowan Oak collaborate to make Nobel Prize winner&#8217;s collection available to all<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Clara Turnage<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A new <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> project seeks to share Nobel Prize-winning author <strong>William Faulkner<\/strong>&#8216;s library with the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Department of Archives and Special Collections<\/strong> in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/4e137ba111ce4e658023c0f954688671\/1\/dbec4b4a100c8e47b84fc3b5407f6776fde7afac1db66a6b6bdab0e28fdbfddd?cache_buster=1744730331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi Libraries<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is partnering with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/4e137ba111ce4e658023c0f954688671\/2\/64a307b5edb3efe8e38dfad946294cd9f8b754129a5ffc4b9b87102aa2a68eb9?cache_buster=1744730331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Rowan Oak<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to re-create Faulkner&#8217;s extensive collection of books, encyclopedias, and novels on a digital platform. The effort will make the noted author&#8217;s inspiration available to researchers and avid readers alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is something we&#8217;ve been talking about for years,&#8221; said <strong>William Griffith<\/strong>, Rowan Oak&#8217;s curator. &#8220;Visitors often ask, &#8216;What did Faulkner read?&#8217; It&#8217;s interesting to read what he was reading before you start reading him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/4e137ba111ce4e658023c0f954688671\/3\/933116bf2c9704b83b52e888dd0dbce6d86be9d44d1bb73c135eca8009578be2?cache_buster=1744730331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital library<\/a>\u00a0is an ever-growing site and already contains many contextual essays, an interactive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/4e137ba111ce4e658023c0f954688671\/4\/20e7fc3fd882f868b9553ce338c6b5a9d20e16cf13b2d014e2b835c4537abf6a?cache_buster=1744730331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photo timeline of the book spaces<\/a>, and much more. A 360-degree interactive map of the library at Rowan Oak is also in the works, and an exhibit featuring images of the home&#8217;s reading room will be display in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/4e137ba111ce4e658023c0f954688671\/5\/47bf2e32fffea80bff60948e580817eef477569b227e21dbc18e0b13394b4bfa?cache_buster=1744730331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>J.D. Williams Library<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0through August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Rowan Oak Library offers a glimpse into Faulkner&#8217;s own reading habits, as well as those of many of his family members,&#8221; said <strong>Jennifer Ford<\/strong>, senior curator of manuscripts at UM Libraries. &#8220;It was a family library, which is also so significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We believe the project will continue to offer so much for Faulkner scholars and enthusiasts as the site develops and grows.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team recently received a community grant from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/4e137ba111ce4e658023c0f954688671\/6\/d4c7754e608f0414871aaeaf05d297c5566ec9802930100e859ec8f708053860?cache_buster=1744730331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to purchase equipment that will help them better archive and display the material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shelves at Rowan Oak, Faulkner&#8217;s home, once held more than 1,200 books, ranging from classic literature such as <em>Don Quixote<\/em> to sci-fi and murder mysteries, including several by Agatha Christie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to take our time with this,&#8221; said <strong>Rachel Hudson<\/strong>, Rowan Oak&#8217;s assistant curator. &#8220;What we&#8217;ve been able to record and contextualize so far is already revealing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One discovery in the collection is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/4e137ba111ce4e658023c0f954688671\/7\/e3885e72445e3caebd3612a6119bac9c02ae4ae420e17cdc9032f7fa3f28aa44?cache_buster=1744730331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faulkner&#8217;s copy of George Gershwin&#8217;s 1931 biography<\/a>. In it are three signatures and annotations on the title page. Faulkner&#8217;s furnishings \u2013 including his books \u2013 were returned to Rowan Oak through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/4e137ba111ce4e658023c0f954688671\/8\/c7dd9d89f1e4b496feb834b062175e5bd6ab6ff01579c0963ae633200ac5dfd6?cache_buster=1744730331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a donation from <strong>Sandra Miller Black<\/strong><\/a>, of Madison, in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gershwin&#8217;s biography is the only book in Rowan Oak&#8217;s collection signed by William Faulkner, as the Faulkner family retained all his other signed volumes, Griffith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I looked down one day and realized, &#8216;I know that handwriting,'&#8221; said Ford, who discovered the inscription while cataloging the collection. &#8220;It says, &#8216;William Faulkner, Chapel Hill, N.C., 27 October 1931.&#8217; It was his inscription and signature.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1931, just a year after Faulkner purchased Rowan Oak, he met <strong>Milton Abernethy<\/strong>, who later introduced Faulkner to <strong>Anthony Buttitta<\/strong>. The three visited a bookstore in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where Faulkner showed the two young men a section from his work-in-progress,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/4e137ba111ce4e658023c0f954688671\/9\/b5bac79ea13f876ea3fbbd185813eac109e61f2d8cf35401197876899dd6c178?cache_buster=1744730331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Light in August<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buttitta and Abernethy also inscribed messages on the title pages of the book. Buttitta&#8217;s inscription reads: &#8220;To Bill in memory of a good time and Rhapsody in Blue.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We consulted Joseph Blotner&#8217;s comprehensive biography, as well as various primary sources, and learned so much about that time in Faulkner&#8217;s life,&#8221; Ford said. &#8220;This book is a perfect encapsulation of that moment in the author&#8217;s early writing career.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gershwin&#8217;s signed biography \u2013 and all the history that accompanies it \u2013 is just one of the many books in Faulkner&#8217;s library, Ford said.
