{"id":148506,"date":"2025-04-16T13:48:05","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=148506"},"modified":"2025-04-16T13:48:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:48:09","slug":"natural-products-center-marks-30-years-of-advancing-research-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/natural-products-center-marks-30-years-of-advancing-research-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Natural Products Center Marks 30 Years of Advancing Research, Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Ole Miss center has become recognized authority on botanicals, consumer safety<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Clara Turnage<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With over 30 years of scientific discovery and consumer advocacy, the <strong>National Center for Natural Products Research<\/strong> has cemented itself as an international authority in botanical medicine and pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/1a5f71584bc1483e890bcc7749163238\/1\/d3994c2c4ef6b97c16c79501d3e3c29824f7afba1fcc6704166e9ea9e92dfa60?cache_buster=1744044320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0center, which opened its doors in 1995, is celebrating 30 years of studying plants, herbs, and other natural medicines and dietary supplements with an eye for quality control and consumer health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening lecture of the 23rd annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/1a5f71584bc1483e890bcc7749163238\/2\/f222a558327a8a422917f2e3f24dc66a6ec36861d4c3997b826888b0f828f5d8?cache_buster=1744044320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>International Conference on the Science of Botanicals<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0highlights the work and successes of the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The vision then was to create a hub where the stakeholders \u2013 academics, government agencies and private entities \u2013 can work together to develop safer natural products,&#8221; said <strong>Ikhlas Khan<\/strong>, center director. &#8220;That mission hasn&#8217;t changed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last three decades NCNPR scientists have documented how&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/1a5f71584bc1483e890bcc7749163238\/3\/db57f71ad5a6969d4af4ad96ab49eadea22ccccd0b0839cf8051019b78b48874?cache_buster=1744044320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a compound in blueberries can help reduce blood pressure<\/a>&nbsp;and how&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/1a5f71584bc1483e890bcc7749163238\/4\/937675da76f117c39e0bbccb81fab1a8445e7e8f2add31b04b5cf3139d081b4c?cache_buster=1744044320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">turmeric and thyme can repel fire ants<\/a>, among dozens of other discoveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The center developed more than 200 analytical methods crucial for ensuring the quality and safety of supplements,&#8221; said <strong>Amar Chittiboyina<\/strong>, the center&#8217;s associate director. &#8220;This science directly led to the recall or ban of thousands of potentially harmful products, safeguarding consumers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Products derived from plants, marine and other natural sources are playing an increasing role in everyday life. The center became an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/1a5f71584bc1483e890bcc7749163238\/7\/6bf97cc2c9e5004f66e05bc437da7058dbc6ef86db3b16a09a04ed8923be8d0b?cache_buster=1744044320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FDA Center of Excellence<\/a>\u00a0in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, the center capitalized on more than half a century&#8217;s worth of expertise and study of cannabis to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/1a5f71584bc1483e890bcc7749163238\/8\/ba23e369082c9925766e92bde1c9aad5ebe69320a1717e28ea25b7a4aa537042?cache_buster=1744044320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open the <strong>National Center for Cannabis Research and Education<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The core mission is still the same, but we have been as agile and flexible as the time has demanded,&#8221; Khan said. &#8220;As the use of natural products continues to grow, our role is to keep increasing research, education and outreach.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists such as <strong>Bill Gurley<\/strong> work to ensure the natural products on the market represent themselves accurately and do what they claim to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So, there&#8217;s huge interest in these natural products,&#8221; said Gurley, a principal scientist in the center. &#8220;What&#8217;s different about botanical substances as opposed to conventional medicines is the way legislation is written. Supplement manufacturers don&#8217;t have to do pre-market safety and efficacy studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Most of these botanicals have been used for hundreds or thousands of years in different cultures, so they&#8217;re assumed safe. But that&#8217;s only true for the way they&#8217;re traditionally used and traditionally prepared.
