Poetry and music are weaved together for \u201cAfter Songs: An Evening of Poetry and Music\u201d<\/strong> at 8 pm Thursday, April 3 in Nutt Auditorium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

University of Mississippi<\/strong> music department faculty\u00a0Michael Rowlett<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(clarinet) collaborates with\u00a0Adrienne Park<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(piano) and\u00a0Philip Snyder<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(flute) to perform Valerie Coleman<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0\u201cPortraits of Langston,\u201d based on poems by Langston Hughes<\/strong>. Rowlett is also premiering a piece by Oxford composer\u00a0Price Walden<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethel Scurlock<\/strong>, Dean of the UM\u00a0Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College<\/strong><\/a>, will be reading Hughes\u2019 poems. This will be the first half of the program, and the world premiere of Walden\u2019s piece, which was commissioned with an individual project grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission<\/strong>, will be the second half of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMichael Rowlett will be premiering my new piece \u2018After Songs: Seven Nocturnes for Clarinet\u2019 based on poems by Michael McFee, complete with the author reading the poetry,\u201d Walden said. \u201cIt was an absolute pleasure to live in Michael McFee\u2019s world, and an equal pleasure to write for a consummate artist like Michael Rowlett. It\u2019s going to be a lovely evening, and we\u2019re so excited to share this piece with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael McFee<\/strong>, a poet, critic, and editor, who often sets his poems in his native North Carolina, are grounded in the particulars of place even as they explore themes of loss, memory, and family life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walden was commissioned by the Southern Foodways Alliance in 2011 for the cantata \u201cLeaves of Greens,\u201d which led Southern Living <\/em><\/strong>Magazine to name them a \u201cHero of the New South\u201d in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
