Atkinson<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>High school juniors and seniors from across the South rolled up their sleeves and helped distribute food to <strong>Gulfport<\/strong> residents in need of assistance this weekend as part of the fifth anniversary of the<strong>\u00a0Trent Lott Leadership Institute&#8217;s Pathways to Leadership<\/strong> program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/70b284ea5c9c442bb6a2a13cebafb1d9\/1\/854c46b7dcb03757ffa6be8e0d7a86692a69583bdac7686b0b93d6328b9eb41d?cache_buster=1742915870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0institute established the program in 2021 as outreach and training for south Mississippi high schoolers. Since that time, the program has grown to include enhanced networking and community service. This year&#8217;s gathering was March 21\u201323 in Gulfport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pathways to Leadership is a weekend event for high school juniors and seniors to learn leadership skills through hands-on service, speakers, and engaging activities. Jones<\/strong><\/a>, associate director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/70b284ea5c9c442bb6a2a13cebafb1d9\/3\/d8e8a672084b5e03bbba782b6295446aeaff50f6a664e11b4c89bb1f81cf9b6b?cache_buster=1742915870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Lott Institute<\/strong><\/a>. &#8220;If you want to be a leader, you&#8217;ve got to invest in your community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 40 students from south Mississippi, southern Alabama, and Tennessee converged to become a community, make connections and invest in the Gulfport community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students completed a service project where they distributed nutritious food and essential goods to people along the Gulf Coast. This was made possible from the assistance of state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/70b284ea5c9c442bb6a2a13cebafb1d9\/4\/f48cd8fdbd0e1c505e6c38e36dfd101e986b2ed45ee8d4319fe633cb1fd2d5b8?cache_buster=1742915870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Rep. Jeffrey Hulum III<\/strong><\/a>, whose district includes Gulfport, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/70b284ea5c9c442bb6a2a13cebafb1d9\/5\/fbb016473590e8c6940b039441576a64c4e753b21b611d3eb41792292c5f28c5?cache_buster=1742915870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Feeding the Gulf Coast<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hulum said he hopes the students felt the power of community and understood what it means to care for others with dignity and compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Life can change in an instant, and any of us could find ourselves in need,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s why it so important to serve one another whenever we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While completing the project, students made all the decisions concerning how to carry it out. They decided how to pack the food boxes, who loaded vehicles with food, who directed traffic and how to interact with the families picking up the food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students did it all using critical thinking, leadership and communication skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Through their practical experience with the food distribution, students learned the framework of the theory of change model,&#8221; said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/70b284ea5c9c442bb6a2a13cebafb1d9\/6\/fbdce7ac291514da806d5e2d814e5f6c21938009ef609411d57bac15f9e5020a?cache_buster=1742915870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Katelin Hayward<\/strong><\/a>, program manager for the Lott Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This provided the skills of how to make a plan that will achieve its outcomes that students can take home with them and use, whether it be with their school principal, community or even their family,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gulfport High School<\/strong> junior <strong>Crosby Parker<\/strong> said his favorite part of the weekend was the service project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was meaningful to give back and see the impact firsthand,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Listening to Rep. Hulum discuss leadership was also inspiring. These were taught by Lott Institute partners from the UM\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/70b284ea5c9c442bb6a2a13cebafb1d9\/7\/6c51cc07e882df2cd15cb308f8fa9a97f1ae33912981127f80f9a5c67733b1ce?cache_buster=1742915870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Center for Practical Ethics<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/70b284ea5c9c442bb6a2a13cebafb1d9\/8\/d4bea17b23068553cd6f4888335ac18a3a552bb8f9f1a26140696547edb093b0?cache_buster=1742915870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of Economic Development<\/a>\u00a0at Insight Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Emerson Morris<\/strong>, a UM sophomore public policy leadership major from Gulfport, participated in Pathways in 2021 while in high school. She has also served as a counselor for the event, along with other Lott Institute undergraduates from the Gulf Coast area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Pathways to Leadership opened my eyes to the fundamentals of leadership, collaboration, and community service,&#8221; Morris said.\u00a0&#8220;It pushed me to recognize that I, too, can be a leader, and I am so glad I have the opportunity to embody servant leadership through this major, on campus and in my community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I loved meeting the next generation of students who will change their communities and the world itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a panel discussion, Pathways participants asked the Ole Miss students about college life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re asked things like &#8216;How do you manage your time?&#8217; and &#8216;How to maintain leadership roles and work your way up in student government?'&#8221; said <strong>Molly Bowen<\/strong>, a junior from <strong>Ocean Springs<\/strong>, majoring in public policy leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I know quite a few (participants) that came on to Ole Miss and they&#8217;re all doing great things.
