{"id":147770,"date":"2025-03-19T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-19T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=147770"},"modified":"2025-03-18T19:35:06","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T00:35:06","slug":"ole-miss-pharmacy-professor-lands-prestigious-grant-to-advance-drug-discovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/ole-miss-pharmacy-professor-lands-prestigious-grant-to-advance-drug-discovery\/","title":{"rendered":"Ole Miss Pharmacy Professor Lands Prestigious Grant to Advance Drug Discovery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Research team to develop tools to streamline exploration of &#8216;proven source of drugs&#8217;<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> pharmacy professor and his team will use $1,157,696 in grant funding to study a group of bacteria that have shown to be a significant resource for potential new medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/889302163de5440c88ec27b3f4257b32\/1\/78e69ece3e4a69b0d76c520769474ac60e9c9d11338ffff80627a52374c0ec1f?cache_buster=1742312994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Institutes of Health<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0awarded its highly competitive Research Grant Project to <strong>Cole Stevens<\/strong>, an associate professor of pharmacognosy in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/889302163de5440c88ec27b3f4257b32\/2\/def036de67121ff8e837654b00537468fd71d6aa86bae00372a59301e68a9d1e?cache_buster=1742312994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Department of BioMolecular Sciences<\/strong><\/a>. The four-year grant will allow his team to accelerate the study of myxobacteria, a type of bacteria that has potential in drug discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The short-term benefits of this work will be for the research community, with the long-term benefits being the development of new drugs,&#8221; Stevens said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work could lead to innovations in an understudied field, said <strong>Donna Strum<\/strong>, dean of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/889302163de5440c88ec27b3f4257b32\/3\/a159109e85ef465e209579d6099713e6bb2d593bd2cebd5e5d0eedda386f29fa?cache_buster=1742312994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>School of Pharmacy<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Stevens has been active in this field for more than 20 years,&#8221; Strum said. &#8220;His work is not only important for our understanding of a little-known bacteria but will have an impact on the future of medicine and public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Myxobacteria live in soil and have led to the development of antibiotics, immune system regulators and cancer-fighting medications such as the chemotherapy drug Ixabepilone, which was developed from the natural compound epothilone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Bacteria are resources that contain potential medicines,&#8221; Stevens said. &#8220;Most of your clinical antibiotics and antifungals come from bacteria. Most of the antibiotics we use came from one single group of bacteria called Streptomyces, and there are a lot of tools out there available to do molecule discovery for Streptomyces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re developing those tools for myxos.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Limited training or guidance are available worldwide on the logistics of studying this phylum of bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This funding enables my lab to develop tools that might lower barriers preventing other scientists from working with myxobacteria,&#8221; Stevens said. &#8220;This is important because myxobacteria are a proven source of drugs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Myxobacteria may hold countless untapped possibilities for scientific and medical advancements.
