The awards recognize Nezhukumatathil&#8217;s work as a poet and environmental educator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As a professor and a mother of two teen boys, I&#8217;m constantly searching for ways to connect and nurture future generations with a deep appreciation and awe of nature and its importance in giving children a robust sense of place and belonging,&#8221; Nezhukumatathil said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Environmentalist Rachel Carson&#8217;s reminder that &#8216;the more clearly we focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction&#8217; seems needed now more than ever to encourage a new sense of gentleness towards our planet and towards each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That quote from Carson goes on top of every syllabus I use with my nature writing classes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Artists fellowship honors 50 artists from a variety of disciplines. Each fellow receives $50,000 and access to resources that contribute to their art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pepe Marcos-Iga Award for Innovation in Environmental Education is one of nine awards granted by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ec64d596db174036baed15c52447d764\/4\/be13413569f8d40174aac670842f223b0c7307cab313a23a91ac4d76b7abb45c?cache_buster=1742242978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North American Association for Environmental Education.<\/a>&nbsp;This award recognizes educators who bring innovative approaches to environmental education, an area in which Nezhukumatathil has been active throughout her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nezhukumatathil said the awards will allow her to work on her next book, which will be a hybrid collection of poems and prose, and continue her work in environmental education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebrated poet and essayist joined <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> in 2016, first as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ec64d596db174036baed15c52447d764\/5\/81e06c5c015699c75ecc480710e2632f73a060f0833b8db903ee7315bef863ed?cache_buster=1742242978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ec64d596db174036baed15c52447d764\/5\/81e06c5c015699c75ecc480710e2632f73a060f0833b8db903ee7315bef863ed?cache_buster=1742242978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Grisham Writer-in-Residence<\/strong><\/a>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her 2020 collection of essays,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ec64d596db174036baed15c52447d764\/6\/8905421de853436acfdc6293f75a2a96210bcdbc6db1da417df4750be32f299b?cache_buster=1742242978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0(Milkweed Editions) was on <em>The New York Times<\/em> bestseller list for seven weeks and was named book of the year by National Public Radio, Barnes and Noble, Esquire, Literary Hub and the New York Public Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her most recent publication,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ec64d596db174036baed15c52447d764\/7\/22f54953b5bcc4f4184392b648b671325b6d6e2c104729dee0561050ced0b652?cache_buster=1742242978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;(Ecco, 2024), is a collection of essays that explore how food and drink shape human identity, call up memories and connect people to culture and place.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ec64d596db174036baed15c52447d764\/8\/924ad19290d8484176c5f0b0b69defadfe9f3ed401bc913ca55dd2c286fd673d?cache_buster=1742242978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food and Wine named it<\/a>&nbsp;one of the best food books of 2024, and it was a bestseller among independent bookstores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The human connection to nature and place has always influenced her writing and her work in the classroom, Nezhukumatathil said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For me, they have always been intertwined,&#8221;
