Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are all under a lot of pressure, a lot of deadlines at work, right?&#8221; Afshar said. &#8220;We wanted to look at the different factors that threaten employee&#8217;s mental health and lead to emotional exhaustion. One such factor that is very interesting to us was emotional labor.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e8ead52195144b3da63941dbc0daa741\/4\/296e43f9f519c278e2d016c0577440345c554e5632b8c6a085c623fcc83ff32a?cache_buster=1741798281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emotional labor<\/a>&nbsp;is managing emotions to fulfill the expectations of a job or social role, or pretending to feel differently than you actually do. Afshar and Itani&#8217;s research looked specifically at salespersons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Managing emotions to meet job demands can lead to exhaustion, dissatisfaction, and negative customer reactions,&#8221; Itani said. &#8220;Job satisfaction is essential for overall well-being, emphasizing the need for supportive workplace cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Employees should not be forced to act but encouraged to be genuine, as authentic interactions foster better customer relationships and contribute to long-term organizational success.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In sales roles, where employees often face rejection, the pressure to perform can lead to significant emotional strain. More than 70% of people working in sales also reported struggling with mental health in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e8ead52195144b3da63941dbc0daa741\/5\/83cd7e374281c5b3f2a1731810650e010ed86cba31c3afe6f2fbb95f15b2a990?cache_buster=1741798281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 State of Mental Health in Sales<\/a>&nbsp;report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Salespeople are expensive employees,&#8221; Afshar said. &#8220;They bring in money for the organization. So, if they miss an opportunity, it means that there&#8217;s no money coming in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When a salesperson burns out, it&#8217;s not just a loss of the person, but it&#8217;s also everything they bring to the company.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers identified two key drivers of burnout and mental health struggles: emotional labor and customer injustice, or when a customer treats a salesperson poorly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Omar-Itani.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Omar-Itani.jpg?resize=640%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-147662\" style=\"width:339px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Omar-Itani.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Omar-Itani.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Omar-Itani.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Omar Itani. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are limited in terms of the resources that we have, both cognitive resources and emotional resources,&#8221; Afshar said. &#8220;That emotional regulation spends a lot of resources, which leads to job dissatisfaction and emotional burnout.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there is no one solution, Afshar&#8217;s upcoming research will look at the benefit of mindfulness exercises in dealing with emotional burnout and the mental strain of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mindfulness is distancing yourself from the situation without judging your feelings,&#8221; the Ole Miss researcher said. &#8220;Looking at the situation for what it is, not internalizing it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But managers, too, can play a role in helping employees be more authentic \u2013 and less likely to &#8220;fake it&#8221; \u2013 at work, Itani said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A supportive work environment with mental health resources, autonomy and regular check-ins is essential,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Enhancing emotional intelligence through training helps employees manage emotions effectively, fostering authentic interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ethical leadership, recognition and self-regulation strategies, such as mindfulness and stress management, further support employee well-being.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having an open relationship with employees so that they feel comfortable sharing problems or stresses with managers is also key to helping them feel supported, Afshar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Communication is the key here,&#8221; Afshar said. &#8220;When employees can communicate their problems, they aren&#8217;t dealing with problems alone.
