Run through Oxford, UM campus honors those lost in the line of duty<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The United States Marshal Service<\/strong> will host the ninth annual Fallen Heroes Honor Run<\/strong> on Friday, March 7<\/strong>, in Oxford<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event honors law enforcement officers across the country who lost their lives in the line of duty. Runners will meet at 6 am in front of the U.S. District Court on Jackson Avenue<\/strong>. The community is welcome to join in the run or cheer from the sidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The USMS Fallen Heroes Honor Run serves as a powerful reminder of the courage and commitment of those who have given everything in service to others,” said Richard Upchurch<\/strong>, chief deputy U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the runners this year will be students from\u00a0University of Mississippi ROTC<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and Department of Veteran and Military Service<\/strong> alongside members of the\u00a0University Police Department<\/strong><\/a>. Service members are encouraged to wear their tactical vests and plates, if possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The run began in 2015 to honor\u00a0Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Wells<\/strong><\/a>, who died in the line of duty in Baton Rouge, Louisiana<\/strong>. Wells was killed while executing an arrest warrant for a fugitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event draws participants from around the country to honor the lives of service members. Marshals from 83 districts participated in the 2024 run, Upchurch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the event begins, runners will travel through the Square and west along University Avenue to the Lyceum, where they will take a group photo before returning to the courthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
