time of year again: <strong>Oxford Blues Festival<\/strong> is back for its fifth year! This year\u2019s rain-or-shine festival will take place July 17\u201319 on the grounds of the <strong>Walton-Young Historic House<\/strong>, next to <a href=\"http:\/\/museum.olemiss.edu\/\"><strong>University Museum<\/strong><\/a> on the idyllic Ole Miss campus. Porter<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s <em>Blues at Home<\/em> exhibit inside University Museum for no charge\u2014admission to this exhibit of striking Blues photographs is usually $5).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Purchase your tickets for the festival online and save: One-day general admission (GA) tickets are $10 in advance ($15 day-of), or a GA weekend pass can be purchased in advance for $25 ($30 day-of). Moore will ask Orlicek about how he got involved in doing artwork for these markers. Oxford-based artist <strong>Chandra Williams<\/strong> will also participate and will answer questions about how art can educate and transform communities. And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euphusruth.com\/\"><strong>Euphus \u201cButch\u201d Ruth<\/strong><\/a>, accomplished Delta photographer, will convey his love for film and for the Mississippi Delta by discussing his activity in the 90s, when he was most active in Blues photography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At 1:15 pm, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><strong>\u201cBlues Scholar Panel\u201d<\/strong><\/span> will begin. Guest <strong>Mark Camarigg<\/strong> is the Publications Manager for <em>Living Blues<\/em> magazine and will soon publish a book of interviews from British magazine <em>Blues Unlimited<\/em>. Blues scholar <strong>Scott Barretta<\/strong> will also speak; Barretta is head writer and researcher for the Mississippi Blues Trail (with <strong>Jim O\u2019Neal<\/strong>) and is the host of the award-winning <a href=\"http:\/\/mpbonline.org\/highway61\/\"><em>Highway 61<\/em> radio show<\/a>. Barretta is also the former editor of <em>Living Blues<\/em> magazine and author of <em>Mississippi: State of Blues<\/em> and <em>The Conscience of the Folk Revival<\/em>, among other works. Moore plans to discuss with Barretta what the next step is for the Blues Trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At 2:30 pm, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><strong>\u201cBlues Musicians Panel\u201d<\/strong><\/span> will feature several musicians from this year\u2019s festival. Moore plans on soliciting opinions from the musicians about what it\u2019s like to write Blues music these days, when the genre has changed so much over the years. And what\u2019s in you has got to come out!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Headlining Friday night is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tascru.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Tas Cru<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, who was awarded the \u201cKeeping the Blues Alive\u201d award by the Blues Foundation in January of this year. In addition to Cru\u2019s four studio Blues albums, he released <em>Even Bugs Sing the Blues<\/em>, an album of original Blues music for kids, which Cru donates to schools and other groups for fundraisers. If you\u2019ve never heard her sing, get ready to be blown away!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The Zediker Boys<\/strong><\/span> are our neighbors <strong>Matthew<\/strong> and <strong>Charlie Zediker<\/strong>, from Water Valley, Miss.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The brothers, ages 12 and 16, have been playing music together for three years, and they are working on their debut album as the band <strong>The Magic Apples<\/strong>. He also plays music solo and has begun to record his originals. Cameron had an extensive career drumming for <strong>Lightnin\u2019 Malcolm<\/strong> and is the grandson of Hill Country great <strong>Junior Kimbrough<\/strong>. If you haven\u2019t yet heard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=12913\"><em>Roosters Blues House<\/em><\/a>, their debut album released last year, it\u2019s worth a listen. For 25 years Gussow partnered with <strong>Sterling \u201cMr. Satan\u201d Magee<\/strong> as the duo <strong>Satan and Adam<\/strong>. For over ten years, Alan Gross played guitar in a band with Mississippi bluesman <strong>Terry \u201cHarmonica\u201d Bean<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Oxford-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=14087\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Cadillac Funk<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>will play next; the self-titled album released earlier this year lets a listener know that though funk is his main voice, frontman <strong>Andrew Yurkow<\/strong> is steeped in the blues, having grown up in Indianola, Miss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/OBF14-MrSipp.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"930\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14750\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/OBF14-MrSipp.jpg?resize=600%2C930\" alt=\"OBF14-MrSipp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/OBF14-MrSipp.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/OBF14-MrSipp.jpg?resize=193%2C300&amp;ssl=1 193w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.state.ms.us\/folklife\/artist.php?dirname=shelton_joe\">Big Joe Shelton<\/a><\/strong><\/span> was exposed to a wide range of music at a young age, and around age 20 he befriended <strong>\u201cBig\u201d Joe Williams<\/strong> (nine-string guitar king). Shelton spent time in Chicago in the 70s, soaking up the blues, before he returned to Mississippi. Expect to see him performing with his four-piece band at the festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And, last but not least, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrsippthemississippiblueschild.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Mr. Sipp, \u201cThe Mississippi Blues Child,\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a> is headlining Saturday night. Born <strong>Castro Coleman<\/strong> in McComb, Miss., he has been playing the guitar for thirty years \u2014since the age of six. In this year\u2019s International Blues Challenge, he won \u201cBest Band\u201d representing Vicksburg Blues Society, and he won the \u201cGibson Guitar Award.\u201d A video of Mr. Sipp\u2019s full performance at the IBC is available on YouTube, and when I watched it I was blown away. He\u2019s an animated entertainer whose showmanship is second only to his guitar playing. Upon watching another short video I understood why he had been chosen to headline the music on Saturday night: everyone should appreciate his show!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">More than anything, the Oxford Blues Festival is a happening for the entire community to enjoy. Festival organizer <strong>Darryl Parker<\/strong> says, \u201cThere\u2019s going to be something for everybody.\u201d The ticket prices are reasonable, and the event is conveniently located in town. Nightly music ends around 10 pm, allowing festivalgoers to head to the Square for a show or a few drinks afterwards.
