{"id":147168,"date":"2025-02-20T13:47:01","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T19:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=147168"},"modified":"2025-02-20T13:47:04","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T19:47:04","slug":"jackie-dibiasie-sammons-honored-as-university-of-mississippi-humanities-teacher-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/jackie-dibiasie-sammons-honored-as-university-of-mississippi-humanities-teacher-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Jackie DiBiasie-Sammons Honored as University of Mississippi Humanities Teacher of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Recipient to give lecture on ancient graffiti on March 4, 2025<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Mississippi Humanities Council<\/strong> and University of Mississippi <strong>College of Liberal Arts<\/strong> have named <strong>Jackie DiBiasie-Sammons<\/strong> as the 2024-25 Humanities Teacher of the Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual award began in 1985 and recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in class instruction, inspiring students and concern for student welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DiBiasie-Sammons, associate professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/90600012af4d4ab9bbf27ead40dffd68\/1\/986acc013a82c3f7f255f51b06df227a73ec40d101dd510f3f41e1769d397522?cache_buster=1739917083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classics<\/a>\u00a0and senior faculty fellow of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/90600012af4d4ab9bbf27ead40dffd68\/2\/d60350dea00b7e14f3f9d956fadb5e8ce51a45a6dd13b64c71891b0c1efad1c4?cache_buster=1739917083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Luckyday Residential College<\/strong><\/a>, teaches and studies Roman archeology and Latin language with a focus on ancient graffiti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m extremely grateful to receive this, and I owe it all to my department,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I have an extremely supportive department who has championed and celebrated every one of my research goals and achievements, and especially my chair, Molly Pasco-Pranger who has worked tirelessly to make my research path possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DiBiasie-Sammons will give a lecture at 5 p.m. March 4 in Bryant Hall, Room 209. The lecture, &#8220;Voices from the Past: Exploring the Humanities Through Ancient Graffiti,&#8221; is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> professor hopes the discussion guides audiences toward examining similarities between the past and present, how the human condition and human experience largely remain the same more than 2,000 years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While we can&#8217;t learn directly from the Romans \u2026 we can learn a lot about ourselves from studying ancient peoples,&#8221; DiBiasie-Sammons said. &#8220;The past can tell us a lot more about the present \u2026 by sort of putting a little bit of space between us and them, we can actually look a lot more inward at ourselves in our own world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Molly Pasco-Pranger,<\/strong> chair and professor of classics, nominated DiBiasie-Sammons for the honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Her scholarship in this area is outstanding and is garnering attention on an international scale; she won the college&#8217;s New Scholar Award in 2020 on the merits of her early work and it has continued apace,&#8221; Pasco-Pranger wrote in her nomination letter to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/90600012af4d4ab9bbf27ead40dffd68\/3\/78e28170c9842dbd0dc218a17f9a84d0b61593d1f791d51d363a657229886ae3?cache_buster=1739917083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Liberal Arts<\/a>. &#8220;She has translated this work into a number of innovative undergraduate courses that make clear the versatility and real-world application of research in the humanities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since joining Ole Miss in 2017, DiBiasie-Sammons has sought to provide an incisive and accessible approach to the world of antiquity. Besides serving as field director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/90600012af4d4ab9bbf27ead40dffd68\/4\/a2918ec28af04e43fe66627f2d3693da0d70670e434ea3e3d7cdd1a85f73e5e9?cache_buster=1739917083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ancient Graffiti Project<\/a>, she has inspired students through studying abroad in Italy and by pioneering several digital technologies to preserve and visualize ancient messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It truly invigorates my research, my teaching; to see it through their eyes makes it even more special,&#8221; she said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DiBiasie-Sammons&#8217;s work has been published in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/90600012af4d4ab9bbf27ead40dffd68\/5\/047a5b6a1cb8886a5cdaa1db9d0a8662033891b5372d598b9ab137a28db9c45b?cache_buster=1739917083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Journal of Archaeology<\/a>, as well as many other professional publications.
