She made her <strong>Metropolitan Opera<\/strong> debut in the title role of <strong><em>Aida<\/em><\/strong>, sang the award-winning solo for composer <strong>Nkeiru Okoye&#8217;<\/strong>s <strong><em>When\u00a0the Caged Bird Sings<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and is a featured artist on the two-time Grammy Award-winning recording <strong><em>Ask Your Mama<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert, dubbed <strong>&#8220;If Love Fails, Try Nothing Else,&#8221;<\/strong> is set for <strong>7:30 pm<\/strong> in the <strong>Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts<\/strong>. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>George W. K. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It not only allows us to perform repertoire with a focus on celebrating Black composers; it allows our students to be part of a larger celebration with a focus on the importance of Black culture in the arts and our society,&#8221; said <strong>Don Trott<\/strong>, professor of music and director of choral activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trott directs the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/19198ba8f3b44400a8b77f52c7a31264\/3\/6432b5586c19f8c48189fc689c0a4972edcb4fa485c3a8f3bfbf6da71353ec1c?cache_buster=1739899667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>UM Concert Singers<\/strong><\/a>, who are slated to perform this year, accompanied by music professor and pianist <strong>Amanda Johnston.<\/strong> The Ole Miss African Drum and Dance Ensemble will present a Ghanaian ethnic dance and two songs on the themes of love and God&#8217;s grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I am very excited to perform a recital with Angela Brown as part of the annual Black History Month Concert,&#8221; Johnston said. &#8220;In addition to being an accomplished dramatic soprano on the opera stage, she is also committed to showcasing the music of Black composers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our program promises to be compelling, including works by Richard Danielpour, Nkeiru Okoye, and John Daniel Carter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown&#8217;s repertoire for the concert includes arranged spirituals, arias from operas penned by Black composers, and art songs commissioned and premiered by Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While on campus, the vocalist will conduct a Q&amp;A session for music students at 4 pm February 24 in the choral rehearsal room of the music building.
