{"id":146896,"date":"2025-02-06T11:18:22","date_gmt":"2025-02-06T17:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=146896"},"modified":"2025-02-06T11:18:25","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T17:18:25","slug":"ole-miss-students-pack-literacy-kits-for-natchez-adams-third-graders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/ole-miss-students-pack-literacy-kits-for-natchez-adams-third-graders\/","title":{"rendered":"Ole Miss Students Pack Literacy Kits for Natchez-Adams Third Graders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Children&#8217;s Literacy Project steps up to help sharpen kids&#8217; reading skills<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Marvis Herring<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of <strong>University of Mississippi <\/strong>students is taking a hands-on approach to improve children&#8217;s reading skills in the state by donating reading resources to third grade students in the <strong>Natchez-Adams School District<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2013,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/67bd2c889a1e4889854e32ae847ad563\/1\/0585174bb6b1f8e17bd6d09810ef6e5eb057a09ea33325b04c647750cc2dff35?cache_buster=1738702486\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">education reform<\/a>\u00a0in <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> has helped dramatically improve the state&#8217;s fourth-grade reading score\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/67bd2c889a1e4889854e32ae847ad563\/2\/cf0197131480068dbb96be79ad9d559dffab6a9e16882fcae5afb3ca3d7b1f7b?cache_buster=1738702486\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ranking<\/a>\u00a0from 49th to ninth in the nation. UM students want to add to the positive momentum to help the next generation succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Literacy is a foundation to everything in life,&#8221; said <strong>Cate Drane<\/strong>, an <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> junior and founder of <strong>The Children&#8217;s Literacy Project<\/strong>. &#8220;Illiteracy leads to a multitude of problems\u2014not only for learning in school.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded at the start of the 2024\u201325 academic year, the student organization focuses on strengthening reading skills among K-5 students. Members assembled more than 250 literacy kits, which will be delivered during a special assembly at <strong>McLaurin Elementary School<\/strong> on Friday, February 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each third-grader will receive a copy of <strong><em>The Lemonade War <\/em><\/strong>(Clarion Books, 2007), this year&#8217;s <strong>Mississippi Reads One Book<\/strong> selection. Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mississippi Reads One Book program encourages schools across the state to read one book together from February 10 to 28. <em>The Lemonade War <\/em>invites classrooms and families to learn about topics such as relationships and forgiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Natchez native, Drane is a public policy leadership and public health double major working on minors in chemistry and biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since her freshman year, she has also volunteered as an academic guide for Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/msmissionacceleration.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mission Acceleration<\/a>&nbsp;program, an AmeriCorps-funded K-5 literacy tutoring program, and seen how investing time and resources pays off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My first year, I worked with a little girl in first grade in Marks, Mississippi,&#8221; Drane said. &#8220;During her entry assessment for reading, she was crying because she couldn&#8217;t read or understand anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Slowly but surely, that little girl read words, then sentences, then paragraphs and chapter books.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her organization&#8217;s inaugural year, Drane chose to donate resources to her hometown schools to help strengthen the district&#8217;s state testing scores for reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Angela Rutherford<\/strong> is the faculty adviser for The Children&#8217;s Literacy Project and director of the university&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/67bd2c889a1e4889854e32ae847ad563\/3\/486ea8e1412faab3de49bc03c8f0001df9542153b231f87f51b511280240499e?cache_buster=1738702486\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction<\/strong><\/a>. She said it gives her hope for Mississippi&#8217;s future to see dozens of college students voluntarily invested in enhancing the next generation&#8217;s reading skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you can&#8217;t read by the end of grade three, you&#8217;re more likely to be incarcerated, more likely to drop out of high school, less likely to go to college or have a consistent career, and more likely to be on public assistance,&#8221; Rutherford said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Children&#8217;s Literacy Project used discretionary funds from the Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction to purchase the literacy kit resources for students and educators.
