Atkinson<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mississippi<\/strong> is ranked toward the bottom of the nation in measures of healthy living, avoidable hospital uses, and medical inequality. <strong>Lindsey Miller<\/strong>, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>, wants to help change that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller is one of five scholars selected from US schools and colleges of pharmacy for the 2024\u201325\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/4dho80ky0v9qwf0ihvwot6j3f\/1\/25f208a9384b08f6ffea376f0ec8659a6f6470d82c53eb28eed05e8855cae8a0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Faculty Scholars program. She will engage in an 18-month mentorship program to study how drug store delivery personnel can influence and improve community health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My research will evaluate the impact of using community pharmacy delivery personnel to administer social needs screenings and collaborate with a cross-trained pharmacy technician\u2014who is known as a community health worker\u2014to drive referrals to community resources,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She will partner with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/4dho80ky0v9qwf0ihvwot6j3f\/2\/801d8a213125a4fbf34eb75bfc863b0518fbfa7f8cd2259626b1c968f030ad30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>G&amp;M Pharmacy<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in <strong>Oxford<\/strong> for the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We in the pharmacy and health community want to do whatever it takes to make things better for our patients,&#8221; said <strong>Bob Lomenick<\/strong>, owner of G&amp;M Pharmacy and <strong>Tyson Drugs Inc<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Whether it is getting our patients resources to help with transportation to the doctor or to help lower prescription costs, through Lindsey&#8217;s guidance we are able to work together to do just that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/4dho80ky0v9qwf0ihvwot6j3f\/3\/e834a6f73d62c8b295c7fcb7f8a9d77267a19801aadbc0f327d6b34d46ddf13e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Commonwealth Fund report<\/a>&nbsp;listed Mississippi as no. 51 in health system performance, and the state&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/4dho80ky0v9qwf0ihvwot6j3f\/4\/a29720fcff5d7f56af73b6ed7a4d5895e0ad5545781e6cba6c73369d9a7a3be8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ranked poorly in many other health care metrics.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller applied to be a NACDS Foundation faculty scholar because she wanted to harness her research skills and provide quality community pharmacy-based, patient-centered research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I knew this program would allow me the opportunity to learn from amazing, experienced mentors and thoughtfully craft a meaningful research project from beginning to end,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Meagan A. Brown<\/strong>, clinical associate professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/4dho80ky0v9qwf0ihvwot6j3f\/5\/f4803db4b72b1f453e601bcdd83156514a8318183446d4919568272b6e44bb5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pharmacy practice<\/a>, had no doubt that Miller would be accepted into the scholars program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Her passion, drive, and commitment to the advancement of community pharmacy practice has been evident since she was a student here at Ole Miss,&#8221; said Brown, also director of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/4dho80ky0v9qwf0ihvwot6j3f\/6\/5628aa3f25d09c1d869cc6afc91362b521892b4a7c14bdf16e59b3ab003b071d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Clinical and Translational Science<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ongoing work between pharmacies in Mississippi and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/4dho80ky0v9qwf0ihvwot6j3f\/7\/a56885381c2a0c27b279c75243f427e38809d8608d18e38024ee0eb0b35b700b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network<\/a>, or CPESN, Health Equity program motivated Miller to conduct this research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was inspired by the CPESN initiative to cross-train pharmacy technicians as community health workers and leverage all members of the pharmacy staff to identify and address health disparities in the lives of patients,&#8221; Miller said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project will track how often delivery personnel give social needs screenings and how many of those screenings identify a need for support or lead to help for the patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Fostering the next generation of leaders is key to ensuring future innovations in public health,&#8221; said <strong>Sara Roszak<\/strong>, NACDS Foundation president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;To date, 50 scholars have participated in this program, and each one has made meaningful contributions to health outcomes and population health.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller will share results from her research in July at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/4dho80ky0v9qwf0ihvwot6j3f\/8\/a19fe844ee1139869aff3371f83214aa4641cc1e12908c416106706a308f8f73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy<\/a>&nbsp;annual meeting in Chicago.
