{"id":146406,"date":"2025-01-15T12:14:09","date_gmt":"2025-01-15T18:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=146406"},"modified":"2025-01-15T12:14:15","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T18:14:15","slug":"ole-miss-program-to-grow-stem-teacher-leaders-across-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/ole-miss-program-to-grow-stem-teacher-leaders-across-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Ole Miss Program to Grow STEM Teacher Leaders Across State"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Library of Congress grant expands program focused on teaching with primary sources<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Center for Mathematics and Science Education<\/strong> has selected four K-12 educators for its new teacher leadership initiative aimed at engaging more students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/543c7c091e0142df957552c8d5ccded0\/1\/f81a5d8921701375c3b756e5e5394500712bc35f7d6cde42f3945064ca92e8dc?cache_buster=1736961104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Library of Congress<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0grant, the four\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/543c7c091e0142df957552c8d5ccded0\/2\/62b5fcd910e2c20a8bd3997687fc4bf7d40439f443abb1afd85bafc0868c5131?cache_buster=1736961104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">STEM Teaching with Embedded Primary Sources<\/a>\u00a0teacher leaders will help K-12 educators incorporate primary sources \u2013 original documents and artifacts that were created at the time under study \u2013 into STEM education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teaching math using <strong>Rosa Parks<\/strong>&#8216; peanut butter pancake recipe or using the original toilet paper roll patent sketch from the late 1800s to squash the &#8220;over versus under&#8221; debate are two of the countless ways STEM teachers are engaging students with primary sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Primary sources are a nice way to help students connect math and science content to other academic subjects,&#8221; said <strong>Julie James<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/543c7c091e0142df957552c8d5ccded0\/3\/f4d6e7a76997d8e0b16f12d78938a05a6f576ed83044d742f3fdefa37fcf7017?cache_buster=1736961104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CMSE<\/a>\u00a0assistant director of professional learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If students are interested in history or if they&#8217;re interested in writing, then we&#8217;re bringing the STEM content into those other areas of interest.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The STEPS Teacher Leaders program, also known as 2STEPS, builds on the success of the center&#8217;s previous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/543c7c091e0142df957552c8d5ccded0\/4\/6efa618679eb5e5d5130841b5da72c1aa24ab33c33b7fa50d6803a178d92e7d0?cache_buster=1736961104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teaching with Primary Sources<\/a>&nbsp;projects, which began in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The center selected the following Mississippi educators for the program based on their contributions to previous program phases and commitment to educational excellence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Kimberlin Foster<\/strong>, Warren Central Junior High School, Vicksburg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Patricia Irby<\/strong>, Chickasaw Elementary School, Olive Branch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Faith Major<\/strong>, Denman Junior High School, McComb<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ashley Ridings<\/strong>, Belle Shivers Middle School, Aberdeen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each teacher leader is developing comprehensive STEM lessons that use Library of Congress primary sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those lessons will be tested in their classrooms, reviewed by the 2STEPS team and published on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/543c7c091e0142df957552c8d5ccded0\/5\/294f569ff34052f93adfe4ade930e2980dc0d16084711465d1413d3d5910c5ec?cache_buster=1736961104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teaching with Primary Sources Consortium Created Materials website<\/a>, which is accessible to educators worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As one of the first teacher leaders, I&#8217;m most excited about the opportunity to shape the future of STEM education in our region,&#8221; said Foster, a science teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I look forward to connecting with passionate educators, sharing insights and working together to inspire our students. Being part&nbsp;of this pioneering group is a thrilling chance to influence positive change.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The center offers STEPS training workshops, where Mississippi teachers can learn more about the Library of Congress&#8217; vast primary sources database, premade lesson units and how to create their own. <strong>Bethany LaValley<\/strong>, the center&#8217;s coordinator of professional development, leads these sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With LaValley, the quartet of teachers will plan and put on STEPS workshops in their respective areas of the state, galvanizing education across the Magnolia State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These workshops provide valuable resources, enhance teaching strategies and create a collaborative environment&nbsp;that encourages professional growth,&#8221; Foster said. &#8220;By equipping teachers with effective tools and methods, we can ultimately enrich the learning experience for students.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CMSE prioritized partnering with historical and cultural venues, such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/543c7c091e0142df957552c8d5ccded0\/6\/83320af7c5ede09411a1dc48a3ade90077dd2be08d2cba0bb063d64ad2f8bd2a?cache_buster=1736961104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Oren Dunn City Museum<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in <strong>Tupelo <\/strong>and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/543c7c091e0142df957552c8d5ccded0\/7\/4df852e607646f25359cff4dc6c96b027755a3e77c11c2d0d0880761255055ec?cache_buster=1736961104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Museum of the Mississippi Delta<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in <strong>Greenwood<\/strong>, to enhance the workshop experience and potentially show attendees how to bring lessons to life using local primary sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating more lessons with <strong>Mississippi <\/strong>primary sources and highlighting its rich industrial and agricultural history are goals of the initiative, LaValley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If teachers recognize that these local resources are there and expose them to the students, then we&#8217;re hoping that will help the students take pride in their community and improve the state&#8217;s retention of talent, especially in rural areas,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really excited about the possibility of building these Mississippi-focused primary source sets and building Mississippi-focused STEM lessons that elevate our state&#8217;s reputation and inform people about Mississippi&#8217;s investments in the space and defense industries, for example.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LaValley and the teacher leaders plan to propose and lead a session at next year&#8217;s Mississippi Science Teaching Association annual conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I hope to show teachers how easy it is to look up and use the readily available primary resources that the Library of Congress provides,&#8221;
