Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The National Sea Grant Law Center<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> will use a $500,000 grant to lead research efforts on water contaminants in the Southeast and Great Lakes regions of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ff466737b0d24ff5a48f60405282b878\/1\/667bd5a2e4fbfb86760e35b80f1deb64d402fa0445bb8cc3339d042851286e18?cache_buster=1736355099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/strong>&#8216;s<\/a>\u00a0National Sea Grant College Program awarded nearly $1 million to support\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ff466737b0d24ff5a48f60405282b878\/2\/cab413da5555371a92d38d07ca4a6b8929a00d15d891bf97dc2093c7db8d76b3?cache_buster=1736355099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research on contaminants of emerging concern<\/a>, or CECs, in the United States. These are pollutants that may pose risks to human health or ecosystems, but that are not yet regulated or widely understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ff466737b0d24ff5a48f60405282b878\/3\/13b3f004c663d88b5edee60435b2671f17c1de8ab48f8c177a465f00a079c39e?cache_buster=1736355099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Sea Grant Law Center<\/a>\u00a0has done a lot of work for decades on water resources and water contamination,&#8221; said <strong>Stephanie Otts<\/strong>, the center&#8217;s director. &#8220;It&#8217;s an area where the law and policy tend to be frustrating because it&#8217;s often reactive. Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The contaminants could also be known substances, but ones that are not regulated, said <strong>Lauren Fremin<\/strong>, the center&#8217;s project coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Nor do we have established policies in place that are going to be proactive in protecting the environment,&#8221; Fremin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ole Miss law center will provide funding to continuing research being supported through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ff466737b0d24ff5a48f60405282b878\/6\/a7444b41e89ab98a3f4820572e06efc198d7653efe4e17ded8e0d599d401bcdf?cache_buster=1736355099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and host a competitive grant process to identify research projects in the Southeast or Great Lakes regions that would benefit from this funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to encourage research that bridges the gap between researchers and government entities that can drive policy change in regions affected by these pollutants, Otts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The idea of this grant competition is to enable university researchers to talk with state agencies and work together to develop their proposal,&#8221; Otts said. &#8220;So, whatever comes out on the other side of this process will be directly applicable or usable to a state agency.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otts and Fremin will open the request for proposals for these grants in fall 2025, with the goal of funding projects beginning in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re a researcher working on contaminants of emerging concern, and you like this idea of potentially partnering with a state agency, we hope you can use the next nine months to think about it and to approach potential partners,&#8221; Otts said. &#8220;Through the grants we&#8217;re able to fund, we hope to see some actual policy changes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This material is based on work supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grant no.
