Ole Miss programs provide opportunities, training for budding musicians in community<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Oxford String Project <\/strong>and Lafayette-Oxford-University Youth Symphony Orchestra<\/strong> will present a semester-ending concert December 7, 2024, at the University of Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The performance, set for 2 pm in Nutt Auditorium<\/strong>, is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ole Miss<\/strong> music professors Armee Hong, Kelsey Smith, Vincent Morreale<\/strong>, and Selim Giray<\/strong> lead the Oxford String Project, which helps to build basic musical skills for beginning musicians in grades 3 through 6, and the LOU Youth Symphony, open to musicians in grades 7-12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am pleased to watch them, not just in playing the violin or cello, but in life,” Hong said. “It is exciting to watch them grow.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oxford String Project participants can learn to play violin, viola, cello, or bass. Sisters Juliet<\/strong>, Natalie, <\/strong>and Elaina Bennett <\/strong>are first-year students in the program, all playing violin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I picked the violin because it was the smallest and easiest to carry,” Natalie Bennett said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elaina Bennett noted that practicing with her sisters has proven helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The hardest thing for me was learning where the notes are on the strings,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ensemble’s repertoire includes simple classical tunes that help the young students acquaint themselves with the instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The LOU Youth Symphony allows students to develop their musical talents at a higher level. It includes a broader range of instruments \u2013 including strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion \u2013 and features more advanced compositions to show off the participants’ growing musical skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The symphony’s performance will feature the overture from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart<\/strong>‘s “The Abduction from the Seraglio” and Richard Rodgers’ “Sound of Music Suite.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quinn Hickerson<\/strong>, a senior from Oxford<\/strong>, plays strings in the symphony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I started playing all the way back in fourth or fifth grade with a private teacher,” Hickerson said. “I haven’t been to a lot of colleges, but this seems like a unique experience. I really treasure it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the Oxford String Project and the LOU Youth Symphony Orchestra are sponsored by the UM\u00a0Department of Music<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Office of Pre-College Programs<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
