Another student was also selected as a finalist for the <strong>Marshall Scholarship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Christian Boudreaux<\/strong>, a senior majoring in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/1\/0f40b9bef47e6f3f4a69766a6d72fd79f53d378c9d6fcafabb79500a30258593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biology<\/a>; <strong>Andy Flores<\/strong>, a recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/2\/38613a8254abfe38bac9dc6541b1c25826b520387c7d3a1fb3ad0dfecf1aa334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ole Miss<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0graduate from <strong>Ocean Springs<\/strong>; and <strong>Kharley Redmon<\/strong>, a senior\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/3\/a2a53df2b7e15d6842b890cca4a596eef4d8a814a716df865200d5e9782327ea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">international studies<\/a>\u00a0and <strong>Arabic <\/strong>major from <strong>Owensboro, Kentucky<\/strong>; were chosen as finalists for two of the most exclusive scholarships available to students in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These students are real change agents \u2013 and that&#8217;s what they&#8217;re looking for,&#8221; said <strong>Vivian Ibrahim<\/strong>, director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/4\/a791728010c5f735b0036365bad16a22bd504e9e7070f49e44dcd349eb775db1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Office of National Scholarship Advisement<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main qualities that Rhodes scholars have is &#8220;moral force of character,&#8221; Ibrahim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We see that in these students but in very different ways,&#8221; she said &#8220;For Andy, it&#8217;s advocacy and thinking about access to education. For Kharley, it&#8217;s integrity in journalism and how we think about people from different parts of the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flores and Redmon are finalists for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/5\/91893e802a471cf1bbf96d4a3723d20abc8696dd87b1d2f952bd26b09fbd0f46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rhodes Scholarship,<\/a>\u00a0which allows students from around the world to study at the <strong>University of Oxford<\/strong> in the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> to complete a master&#8217;s or doctoral degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university has produced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/6\/0bc3690d0b48072eae97b439d4794b6dc17671f8a3215e365d1529874b3ba6c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">27 Rhodes scholars, the most recent being <strong>Arielle Hudson<\/strong>, of <strong>Tunica<\/strong><\/a>. Hudson was the university&#8217;s first African American female Rhodes recipient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boudreaux, an <strong>Oxford<\/strong> native, is a finalist for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/7\/84b71491a891b43525fe4af613fd5c781505e7e7fbc2b288b9c08c4479b13093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marshall Scholarship,<\/a>\u00a0which funds two years of study in master&#8217;s degree programs of scholars&#8217; choice in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s both a scientist and someone who really cares about how we make science accessible to the public,&#8221; Ibrahim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>Stamps Scholar<\/strong>, he won a <strong>Goldwater Scholarship<\/strong> as a sophomore in 2023. That enabled him to work in a NOAA facility in <strong>San Diego<\/strong> on a summer internship. Most recently, Boudreaux was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/8\/ed85e2614d33e7646c2c1fa139dd86605abd6f783b649de3d62bec4731db0fd0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">named a <strong>Truman Scholar<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0this spring while studying abroad in Zanzibar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also founded <strong>Aqua Culture<\/strong>, a student organization at Ole Miss that works to promote and maintain healthy aquatic environments. As a freshman, he served as president of <strong>Hill Country Roots<\/strong>, a student organization that focuses on preserving <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>&#8216;s forests and native trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If selected as a Marshall scholar, Boudreaux hopes to earn master&#8217;s degrees in evolutionary genetics and marine systems and policies from the University of Edinburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I am interested in using genetic techniques to understand the effects of climate change on marine organisms and ecosystems,&#8221; Boudreaux said. &#8220;I will take this science in conjunction with my policy and management training to inform conservation practice aimed at preserving marine ecosystems.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flores graduated from Ole Miss in spring 2023 with degrees in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/9\/f9e4c0943018aa444a35a273ec1c4df2b6c43c4472fc64fc46bda24460ece4f0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public policy leadership<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/10\/66461d33a0a18f58560ca833464de9b1d1d97c1b9817efe6d073a9ec5237d6de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">philosophy<\/a>. He was the first Latino Truman Scholar from Mississippi and an active member of the <strong>Associated Student Body<\/strong>, <strong>First-Generation Student Network<\/strong>, and <strong>Ole Miss Debate Team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flores was named a law and public policy fellow at the <strong>University of California<\/strong> at <strong>Berkeley<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Goldman School of Public Policy and a Leadership<\/strong> and the <strong>American Presidency Scholar<\/strong> at the <strong>Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Social movement building, that&#8217;s my bread and butter because I am motivated by the fact that we can do better,&#8221; Flores said. &#8220;I want more for Mississippi and I want more for the South.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since graduation, he has served as a special assistant to the director at the <strong>Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator <\/strong>and most recently as a voter protection associate in the <strong>North Carolina<\/strong> coordinated campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If selected for a Rhodes Scholarship, Flores said he hopes to earn master&#8217;s degrees in sociology and higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m deeply fascinated by the ability of universities across the world \u2013 but particularly in America \u2013 to bridge people&#8217;s experience with themselves and with their society,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I want to harness education to make society more loving, more equal and, more to the surface for me, I want to figure out how we can use education in a way that serves everyone and protects democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redmon hopes to use her Rhodes scholarship to further her study of Arabic through a master&#8217;s degree in Middle Eastern studies. She won first place in the Best of the South Feature Competition from the S<strong>outheast Journalism Conference<\/strong> and spent time tutoring students in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/11\/bd59185a7fffcf08bd23d50b1f134c06a638f945ae2268ceae625cac0f59edb4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Arabic Language Flagship Program<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redmon is this year&#8217;s editor-in-chief of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/e7m0bfin8u6crf3qguzo99vkr\/12\/8e5e8c67271926438206c98d5b5b5045e8dccd61a0ba6638b1b2b8ef85a158b0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>The Daily Mississippian<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and said she hopes to use her expertise in Middle Eastern studies as a foreign correspondent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I studied abroad in Jordan for about half a year and, prior to that I had studied there for two months through the flagship program,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I feel very connected to making sure there&#8217;s adequate coverage of that region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think the biggest issue is that, particularly in journalism, people really want things to be black or white. There&#8217;s a lot of gray that gets lost in between.
