The University of Mississippi Wind Ensemble<\/strong> will continue its 2024\u201325 concert season on Thursday, November\u00a0 21, at 7:30 pm at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Tim Oliver<\/strong>, director of bands in the Department of Music<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two highlights of this performance are a collaboration between a solo voice and winds as well as the\u00a0performance of two works commissioned in part by the University of Mississippi Wind Ensemble.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concert will begin with \u201cThe Blessing of Light,\u201d<\/strong> a recent work by Australian composer Jodie\u00a0 Blackshaw<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A member of our voice faculty, Dr. Jos Milton<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Music, will collaborate with the\u00a0wind ensemble on a famous piece titled \u201cKnoxville: Summer of 1915\u201d<\/strong> by Samuel Barber<\/strong>. Originally for\u00a0solo voice and orchestra, this professional-level work has been performed worldwide by renowned soloists and ensembles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emerging composer Gala Flagello<\/strong> wrote the next work, \u201cLove & Nature.\u201d<\/strong> Flagello finished this piece\u00a0 earlier this year which is being performed by numerous wind bands across the country. It is one of two commissioned compositions in the concert.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Milton returns to the stage accompanied by Professor of Music, Amanda Johnston<\/strong> to perform one of Robert Schumann<\/strong>\u2019s vocal songs, \u201cNachtlied.\u201d<\/strong> This short, serene work is followed by the second of the commissioned compositions, \u201cFantasia on a Theme of Robert Schumann\u201d<\/strong> by Steve Danyew<\/strong>. These two works will be performaed as a set since the vocal song inspired Danyew to compose this newly\u00a0commissioned work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concert will close with a now famous piece by Mexican composer Arturo M\u00e1rquez<\/strong>. \u201cDanz\u00f3n No. 2\u201d\u00a0<\/strong> is the result of the composer\u2019s introduction to Latin ballroom dancing and has gained such popularity\u00a0some have called it the second national anthem of Mexico.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
