Lafayette County<\/strong> Circuit Court<\/strong> Judge <\/strong>has officially declared a\u00a0missing Ole Miss<\/strong> student as dead<\/a>\u00a0as the case continues against his accused killer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an order dated October 15, 2024, the judge said, \u201cthe proof is evident and the presumption is great\u201d that Jimmie ‘Jay’ Lee<\/strong> is dead. The ruling allows for a death certificate to be issued to the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The order said Lee \u201chas undergone a catastrophic event that exposed him to imminent peril or danger reasonably expected to result in the loss of life.\u201d It continues that Lee\u2019s disappearance \u201ccan not be satisfactorily explained\u201d after a \u201cdiligent search\u201d by law enforcement and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee disappeared July 8, 2022<\/a>. The 20-year-old was last seen at an apartment complex in Oxford, Mississippi<\/strong>, and the body has not been found. Jay was well known in the college town\u2019s LGBTQ+<\/strong> community, where the disappearance sparked fear.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheldon ‘Timothy’ Herrington Jr.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>is charged with the murder and is awaiting trial. He has maintained his innocence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Herrington, who had graduated from the university, was arrested two weeks after Lee vanished, then released five months later on a $250,000 bond after agreeing to surrender his passport and wear an ankle monitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Herrington faces life in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
