Hahn<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using documentary studies to train the next generation of storytellers holds such importance to <strong>Berkley Hudson <\/strong>that he has gifted the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> an endowment to bring visiting documentarians to campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hudson, an <strong>Ole Miss <\/strong>alumnus and associate professor emeritus of the <strong>University of Missouri School of Journalism<\/strong>, has given $60,000 to enable the UM\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/453utngxkbkqkt5uiinvntnbg\/1\/f8c0a21e9091400595ae5277ddf864c5a2e44d38fb1717bc6bb53024fd330c0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Center for the Study of Southern Culture<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to invite documentarians to work with students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In a 21st-century world now awash in a torrent of visual images, this project serves as a template for anyone interested in their own family stories and community stories, regardless of where they live,&#8221; Hudson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a template for how to look, slow down and discover what visual images can teach us \u2013 researchers, students or ordinary citizens. And it&#8217;s a template for conversations with our grandparents, our children and our neighbors about the role that photographs play in documenting our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I hope my gift inspires students with their own projects. In many ways, my project started when I was a student at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/453utngxkbkqkt5uiinvntnbg\/2\/6f1270704dd8580ebe0f8d014f64c07e4405950c0561a6bf088e67c6ad572c69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Mississippi<\/a>, studying everything I could about the American South.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His project of four decades has involved preserving, researching, exhibiting and publishing the <strong>Jim Crow<\/strong>-era photographs of <strong>Columbus\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/453utngxkbkqkt5uiinvntnbg\/3\/7a1ee51a76af9c85b1a97a7939e11cdee50e6744e90b2623ee04044669432eae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photographer <strong>O.N. Pruitt<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pruitt once photographed Hudson, a Columbus native, and his family. Hudson and four boyhood friends \u2013 <strong>Jim Carnes, David Gooch, Mark Gooch<\/strong>, and <strong>Birney Imes<\/strong> \u2013 acquired Pruitt&#8217;s 142,000 negatives in 1987. They transferred them for safekeeping in 2005 to one of the nation&#8217;s foremost repositories of the <strong>American South<\/strong>, the <strong>University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Southern Historical Collection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hudson created a <strong>National Endowment for Humanities<\/strong> traveling photographic exhibition, which is slated to come to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/453utngxkbkqkt5uiinvntnbg\/4\/f70a15a71935b8fd3ec2da67c1da4bc0fbd614a03d8c05d4483d45604a971b8f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University Museum<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 2027, and the companion book, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/453utngxkbkqkt5uiinvntnbg\/5\/9f9019e650b1fd0f2295e74bbe4c7a40cdc8fbb63a45947e6f0e744beaf35183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">O.N. Pruitt&#8217;s Possum Town: Photographing Trouble and Resilience in the American South<\/a>,&#8221; published by <strong>UNC Press<\/strong> in partnership with <strong>Duke University<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Center for Documentary Studies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I want students to realize that photographs can play a very important role in unlocking stories about who we are and who we have become,&#8221; Hudson said. &#8220;Documentarians try to explain the world around us, where we&#8217;ve been and where we&#8217;re going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I also hope my gift will signify the importance of funding and support for the humanities broadly and UM&#8217;s Center for the Study of Southern Culture specifically. The center long has been a powerhouse incubator. Its alumni travel the world, telling stories that need to be told about the American South.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katie McKee<\/strong>, the center&#8217;s director, expressed gratitude for Hudson&#8217;s support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Professor Hudson is an accomplished documentarian in his own right, and even before he visited the university as part of the SouthTalks lecture series to discuss his &#8216;O.N.
