Thursday performance to feature premiere of commissioned work by emerging composer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The University of Mississippi Wind Ensemble<\/strong> will begin its 2024-25 concert season on Thursday (Oct. 10) with a 7:30 p.m. performance at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conducted by Tim Oliver<\/strong>, director of bands in the\u00a0Department of Music<\/strong><\/a>, the performance focuses on classics and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This concert features two guest conductors: Selim Giray<\/strong>, associate professor of music and director of orchestral studies, and Don Trott<\/strong>, professor of music and director of choral activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giray will lead the\u00a0wind ensemble<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in a performance of the orchestral transcription “March and Procession of Bacchus<\/strong>” by Leo Delibes<\/strong>. Trott will conduct a classical arrangement from the Brahms <\/strong>masterwork “A German Requiem<\/strong>” called “Blessed Are They<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, saxophone professor Adam Estes<\/strong> will collaborate with the wind ensemble on a baritone saxophone and chamber winds work titled “Polarities<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Ole Miss Bands<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and Estes helped commission the new composition by Jorge Machain<\/strong>, an emerging composer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This performance will be the Mississippi premiere of ‘Polarities,'” Estes said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Machain’s composition features angular melodic writing, colorful instrumentation, polytonality and groove, which is enhanced by a diverse battery of percussion instruments and piano.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concert begins with Ron Nelson<\/strong>‘s “Rocky Point Holiday<\/strong>” and closes with one of John Philip Sousa<\/strong>‘s famous marches, “Hands Across the Sea<\/strong>.” This performance celebrates the 125th\u00a0anniversary of the Sousa piece, which was published in 1899.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
