{"id":143613,"date":"2024-10-08T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=143613"},"modified":"2024-10-07T21:03:12","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T02:03:12","slug":"gilder-jordan-lecture-focuses-on-enslaved-peoples-legal-consciousness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/gilder-jordan-lecture-focuses-on-enslaved-peoples-legal-consciousness\/","title":{"rendered":"Gilder-Jordan Lecture Focuses on\u00a0Enslaved People&#8217;s Legal Consciousness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slavery scholar to explore race and barriers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">by Rebecca Lauck Cleary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the nation&#8217;s top scholars of <strong>slavery <\/strong>and <strong>gender <\/strong>will explore how much enslaved people in the South knew about the law and how that influenced their decisions to flee to the North in this year&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gilder-Jordan Lecture<\/strong> in <strong>Southern Cultural History<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thavolia Glymph<\/strong>, a professor at the <strong>Duke University School of Law<\/strong>, plans to explore the enslaved people&#8217;s legal consciousness at\u00a06 p.m. Oct. 8 in <strong>Nutt Auditorium<\/strong>. The lecture is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large and robust body of literature has enriched people&#8217;s understanding of the flight of enslaved people to Union lines during the <strong>Civil War<\/strong>, Glymph said. Relatively little attention, however, has been paid to the role their understanding of the law played in the decision to pursue freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The lecture will focus on how an understanding of the law guided enslaved people&#8217;s decision to flee to Union lines,&#8221; Glymph said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glymph holds the <strong>Peabody Family Distinguished Professorship in History<\/strong> at Duke, is a faculty research scholar at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/bdynoawtpq6azpmmvxcr2u46k\/1\/6f95c9c74f0675584556bb7b5d8281e269ff648f6b5451bb3ec85e0f1ee6094c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Duke University Population Research Institute<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and is the first Black woman to be president of the <strong>American Historical Association<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u00a0has spent her career writing and studying about Black women, race and barriers. Her books include\u00a0&#8220;<strong>Out of the House of Bondage: The Transformation of the Plantation Household<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0(Cambridge University Press,\u00a02008) and\u00a0&#8220;<strong>The Women&#8217;s Fight: The Civil War&#8217;s Battles for Home, Freedom, and Nation<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0(University of North Carolina Press, 2020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I anticipate a prolific talk that will examine the institution that without a doubt had more impact on this country than any other institution, and that is the institution of slavery, and that legacy is still in place today,&#8221; said <strong>Charles Ross<\/strong>, UM professor of history and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/bdynoawtpq6azpmmvxcr2u46k\/2\/b5b08f89c119b89cd6339c790059ff8f64251c8e906d67da5c8b7f52691507d6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>African American studies<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and interim director of the university&#8217;s <strong>African studies<\/strong> program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Her talk is very appropriate and timely with what is going on in this country, with the opportunity for the American people to elect an African American woman, and what an historic achievement that would be, if it takes place.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized through the university&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/bdynoawtpq6azpmmvxcr2u46k\/3\/44c5734ae8ae5190889caa254c576283e7b6389e91565909161a5524a1150e1d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Center for the Study of Southern Culture<\/strong><\/a>, African American studies program,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/bdynoawtpq6azpmmvxcr2u46k\/4\/32bd6f9af322f60734736fe81e1555fe4ae1b09b61c16412bd62c4f797d8966e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Center for Civil War Research<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/bdynoawtpq6azpmmvxcr2u46k\/5\/6a273c09be78551991bdf716388e1423973e332292481f5d4eddf9cf371ccfff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Department of History<\/strong><\/a>, the series is made possible through the generosity of the <strong>Gilder Foundation Inc<\/strong>.
