{"id":143424,"date":"2024-10-02T08:35:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-02T13:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=143424"},"modified":"2024-10-01T10:58:38","modified_gmt":"2024-10-01T15:58:38","slug":"ole-miss-experts-instruct-public-school-teachers-on-ai-best-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/ole-miss-experts-instruct-public-school-teachers-on-ai-best-practices\/","title":{"rendered":"Ole Miss Experts Instruct Public School Teachers on AI Best Practices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>More than 80 Tennessee educators train with writing and rhetoric faculty<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Erin Garrett<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What began as an effort to advise <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> writing faculty on artificial intelligence use in the classroom has expanded to reach regional K-12 teachers this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in spring 2023 by faculty members in the <strong>UM\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/xvbz16lfgvqttqau3h0exwuj\/1\/178ebfde8d195783e10d408d22b952db7cc9d276bb9bef3d963d1cf8f39c4918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Writing and Rhetoric<\/a><\/strong>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/xvbz16lfgvqttqau3h0exwuj\/2\/b5db6a180c81352f96888f22e8ee0ad3d23b351028fe7933e6ee5c06f3a18e4b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mississippi AI Institute<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0launched a two-day seminar in June of that year for 23 campus faculty members with the goal of helping them incorporate generative AI in their classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since, interest has grown exponentially, and the institute has trained more than 90 faculty members at the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We now do this as much as we can for faculty across the entire university and we&#8217;re now offering it to teachers in a number of K-12 schools in our area,&#8221; said <strong>Marc Watkins<\/strong>, institute director and lecturer in writing and rhetoric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This July, Watkins, <strong>Stephen Monroe<\/strong>, writing and rhetoric chair, and <strong>Guy Krueger<\/strong>, writing and rhetoric assistant chair, traveled to <strong>St. Mary&#8217;s Episcopal School<\/strong> in Memphis to give a full-day version of the AI workshop. More than 80 faculty from several schools in the <strong>Tennessee Association of Independent Schools<\/strong> attended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_1507.jpeg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_1507-683x1024.jpeg?resize=640%2C960&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-143427\" style=\"width:440px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_1507.jpeg?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 683w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_1507.jpeg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_1507.jpeg?resize=768%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_1507.jpeg?resize=1024%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_1507.jpeg?w=1080&amp;ssl=1 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Marc Watkins (right), director of the Mississippi AI Institute, talks to teachers from the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools to help them &#8216;understand both the possibilities and implications of AI.&#8217; Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Marc and Stephen&#8217;s insight on the practical applications\u2014and pratfalls\u2014of AI were informative, engaging, and helpful in supporting our teacher&#8217;s professional development,&#8221; said <strong>Lauren Rogers<\/strong>, head of upper school at St. Mary&#8217;s. &#8220;Many of them are interested in having them return to campus again for more conversation and training.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beverly Brooks<\/strong>, St. Mary&#8217;s director of college counseling, said she is &#8220;frequently in conversation&#8221; with students, families, and college partners about generative AI and where it belongs in their process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The TAIS-Ole Miss program gave me direction in ensuring that our students and families feel comfortable and confident using AI responsibly as they enter the college application process and beyond,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I found the resources useful and the insight invaluable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides conversing with an AI avatar and generating original songs, the group created lesson plans and reading lists based on students&#8217; interests with AI, and debated the ethical challenges created by the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quarter of American teachers say AI tools do more harm than good in K-12 education, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/xvbz16lfgvqttqau3h0exwuj\/3\/6983481d9ce88c7dd41533771dd896b8ab7040aab7832ed156df169992e91b89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center poll<\/a>. This underscores the need for comprehensive AI literacy training for educators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watkins, who also serves as assistant director of academic innovation at the university, said the institute&#8217;s top priority is to help teachers understand both the possibilities and implications of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These tools are advertised to save time, but we want them to do more than save time,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We invite them to explore ways AI can help students with their learning outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;However, we also explore how they could hinder them and give them practical advice on how curb AI abuse and misuse in the classroom.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team is slated to offer a full-day version of the institute for the <strong>Collierville, Tennessee<\/strong>, school district on November 5.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monroe thanked the &#8220;innovative faculty&#8221; in writing and rhetoric for their contributions to elevating the university&#8217;s expertise in this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The University of Mississippi has become a national leader in the emerging field of applied artificial intelligence,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We are using this expertise to help UM students build AI literacy. We are also sharing lessons with university and K-12 teachers around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;During this era of dizzying technological change, educators must collaborate and support each other.
