Mayfield<\/strong>. After years of collaboration between local partners and the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>, Mayfield&#8217;s restored home has officially opened as a museum and cultural center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is a momentous occasion for the Ecru community,&#8221; said <strong>Jeannie Speck-Thompson<\/strong>, an Ecru native and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/5e2bhouj21pd9avlga51khtca\/1\/db47d2b2793bbeb54b63239bac0b948846ae41af7635497b24eb56c771a70737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">university archivist and assistant professor<\/a>&nbsp;who has been a driving force behind the project since its inception. &#8220;Sharing M.B. Mayfield&#8217;s inspiring story and showcasing his artwork is a true honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The museum will be a place of education, inspiration, and pride for the whole community of Ecru for generations to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The soft opening event on July 18 welcomed guests for an exclusive first look at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/5e2bhouj21pd9avlga51khtca\/2\/264fa8e995ea36220d21a56deb28e46eacc378905027d56557c5be4fe5daa8bf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>M.B. Mayfield House Museum<\/strong><\/a>. Attendees enjoyed guided tours of the historic home, which was restored to preserve Mayfield&#8217;s personal effects and creative works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayfield&#8217;s story is of special significance to the university, as he was one of the institution&#8217;s first Black students \u2013 albeit not publicly due to Jim Crow laws at the time. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bob McGee<\/strong>, president of the <strong>Pontotoc County Historical Society<\/strong>, attended the soft opening and said the society &#8220;looks forward to working with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/5e2bhouj21pd9avlga51khtca\/3\/c5ed391df663770a55dc0d607d6d72c58d53ee9dea277ee6ce11cc42003edfd8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M.B. Mayfield Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;on future projects honoring this amazing artist.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are very excited about the opening of the Mayfield House Museum in Ecru,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Mr. Mayfield was an amazing artist who, through his art, brought to life his memories of his childhood and hometown.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum&#8217;s opening is one of the latest milestones in a project that was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/5e2bhouj21pd9avlga51khtca\/4\/c280bc579bb63c879b96457f5f6a4353041194d6564b2351da1b72dd9bfdd26c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bolstered by a multi-year collaboration with M Partner<\/a>, a signature initiative of the university&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/5e2bhouj21pd9avlga51khtca\/5\/afe5a889db0e86c3d772baeedea271728f91c964f8ecfd4cbaec4fca35dfe722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Grisham-McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this collaboration, Ole Miss faculty and students have provided critical support, from cataloging Mayfield&#8217;s personal archives to developing marketing and outreach strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s wonderful to see that the project has matured and is now becoming a reality for the Ecru community,&#8221; said <strong>Laura Martin<\/strong>, M Partner director and associate director of the Grisham-McLean Institute. &#8220;The connections and relationships made during M Partner&#8217;s involvement outlasted the work and serve as a prime example of how the initiative helps energize projects in our state.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With support from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/5e2bhouj21pd9avlga51khtca\/6\/93fc1a7dd432b610e2fe80657e752073e1fc6e6141121768adeb645fa4513739\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Second Nature<\/strong><\/a>, the University of Mississippi Museum has also recently added an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/306\/5e2bhouj21pd9avlga51khtca\/7\/2286d6cc9ff8d944e7d70cf86149c899d988d5068f6f2a108f3dc264f38120ef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M.B. Mayfield Traveling Trunk<\/a>&nbsp;to its educational programming for grades K-12. Sponsored by the&nbsp;M.B. Mayfield Foundation&nbsp;and curated by Speck-Thompson, the trunk is free to rent and contains replicas of Mayfield&#8217;s artwork, lesson plans and other resources to bring his story into classrooms across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The M.B. Mayfield Traveling Trunk provides a different, but refreshing perspective of Mississippi history,&#8221; said <strong>Kassidy Franz<\/strong>, the UM Museum&#8217;s curator of education. &#8220;With never-before-seen artworks that were granted usage for the trunk, individuals will gain new insight and knowledge about Mayfield&#8217;s remarkable life and legacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speck-Thompson said that providing the trunk to the museum is &#8220;exciting and meaningful.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I hope the trunk will serve as a valuable educational tool, inspiring and educating those who use it through the art and writing of M.B. Mayfield,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The M.B. Mayfield House Museum welcomes guests by appointment.
