Photo by Srijita Chattopadhyay\/ Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe benefit from sharing ideas and perspectives from people who come from different countries, cultures and backgrounds,\u201d said Provost <strong>Noel Wilkin<\/strong>, who met with the fellows during their visit. \u201cThis opportunity to exchange ideas from business leaders in <strong>Africa <\/strong>is extraordinary. It is my hope that they will benefit from this visit as much as we will.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mandelawashingtonfellowship.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The <strong>Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is the flagship program of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/yali.state.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Young African Leaders Initiative<\/strong><\/a>. Fellows, all between the ages of 25 and 35, are accomplished innovators and leaders in their communities and represent 23 different African nations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mandela fellows attended sessions hosted by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cme.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence<\/strong><\/a>,<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mclean.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grisham-McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Office of Technology Commercialization<\/strong>, <strong>African-Caribbean Student Association<\/strong> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/business.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>School of Business<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis visit will provide an opportunity for UM students, faculty and staff to engage with international business leaders and strengthen our partnership with JSU,\u201d said <strong>J.R. Photo by Srijita Chattopadhyay\/ Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the visit, the fellows networked with university and community leaders, toured the Center for Manufacturing Excellence, and learned about technology commercialization and business management.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chazz Ndaba<\/strong>, an engineer from <strong>Johannesburg<\/strong>, <strong>South Africa<\/strong>, said the tour of the Center for Manufacturing Excellence was an eye-opener.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe realized technology like this is groundbreaking and is improving lives for people across Mississippi,\u201d Ndaba said. \u201cIt\u2019s truly incredible what you\u2019re doing here, and it\u2019s what we want to do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cesaltina Adriano<\/strong>, a fellow from <strong>Angola<\/strong>, said her main takeaway from the <strong>Oxford <\/strong>tour was the emphasis on community building.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been really interesting to see that the university is trying to give back to the community, and what kind of impact that can have on the students surrounding,\u201d Adriano said. \u201cThat has been inspiring for me.\u00a0It, and the centers you have here, it just shows me how far we have to go.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nahuja Hatibu<\/strong>, of <strong>Tanzania<\/strong>, said seeing so many women in leadership roles at Jackson State and <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> has also been motivating for her.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe whole team leading us here is women,\u201d Hatibu said. \u201cWe have been so motivated by that because it is hard to know that it is possible to be a woman and be a professor and a mother. Young African Leaders, said <strong>Saundra McFarland<\/strong>, co-administrative director of the 2024 Mandela Washington Fellowship Leadership in Business Institute and associate professor of business law at JSU.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn this regard, we ensure that the fellows participating in <strong>JSU\u2019s Leadership in Business Institute<\/strong> experience the best that Mississippi offers, including our renowned institutions of higher learning,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUltimately, we hope that the fellows find enrichment and inspiration during their visit to the University of Mississippi and that they receive skills, knowledge and connections that will empower meaningful contributions to their home communities.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The partnership between JSU and UM began in 2020, when Love and McFarland served on the Mississippi Entrepreneurship Forum planning team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fellowship is celebrating its 10th anniversary and has helped nearly 6,500 young leaders from every country in <strong>Sub-Saharan Africa<\/strong> visit the United States for academic and leadership training.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a
