Higginbotham, who has more than 25 years’ experience in research, grant writing, and university leadership, will start his new position on Aug. 1, pending approval from the\u00a0Institutions of Higher Learning<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Board of Trustees.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDr. Higginbotham\u2019s extensive and versatile research leadership background forms a strong foundation for advancing our university\u2019s capacity for innovation and economic development,” Chancellor Glenn Boyce<\/strong> said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n “With his proven track record of fostering productive collaborations and advancing research programs, he will lead us to new heights and create exciting opportunities for our talented students, faculty and researchers, whose discoveries change lives and address society\u2019s most pressing challenges.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Higginbotham spent the last 24 years at the University of Alabama<\/strong>, where he has served as\u00a0the founding director of the Institute for Rural Health and Research<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0National Center on Forensics<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and as a tenured professor in the\u00a0Department of Community Medicine and Population Health<\/strong>.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has also served in leadership roles for the University of Alabama\u2019s Office of Research and Economic Development<\/strong> and as a senior fellow for the Alabama Life Research Institute<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Higginbotham will also hold faculty titles in the departments of\u00a0public health<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0pharmacy administration<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe role of vice chancellor for research and economic development is pivotal for any university, particularly a flagship institution like Ole Miss,\u201d Higginbotham said. \u201cThis position is critical in steering the research agenda, ensuring strategic alignment with the university’s mission and enhancing the institution’s reputation as a leader in innovation and discovery.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n The vice chancellor of research and economic development leads the\u00a0Office of Research and Sponsored Programs<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0as it supports faculty, staff, and students pursuing research <\/strong>or other sponsored projects funded by federal, state, local and private agencies and organizations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n “My primary goal will be to elevate our institution’s research and scholarly activity profile and its economic impact both regionally and nationally,\u201d he said. \u201cI aim to work with the faculty, staff, and students to foster an environment where innovative research and scholarly activity can thrive, interdisciplinary collaboration is encouraged, and external partnerships are strengthened.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBy doing so, we can enhance the university’s contribution to knowledge
