{"id":140795,"date":"2024-07-03T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=140795"},"modified":"2024-07-02T14:19:17","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T19:19:17","slug":"center-for-mathematics-and-science-education-tackles-increasing-teacher-shortage-with-middle-math-institutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/center-for-mathematics-and-science-education-tackles-increasing-teacher-shortage-with-middle-math-institutes\/","title":{"rendered":"Center for Mathematics and Science Education Tackles Increasing Teacher Shortage with Middle Math Institutes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More than 40 educators have earned teaching endorsement through special program&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">by Marvis Herring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A record 18 <strong>educators <\/strong>completed a summer program at the University of Mississippi aimed at reducing the growing <strong>middle school<\/strong> <strong>math teacher shortage<\/strong> statewide.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UM Center for Mathematics and Science Education wrapped up its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cmse.olemiss.edu\/middlemathinstitute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Middle Math Institutes<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;on Thursday (June 27), where participants became eligible to add on a <strong>Mississippi Department of Education<\/strong> endorsement to teach math classes in grades 7-8.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mississippi educator shortages increased last school year from 4,988 to 5,012 vacancies across the state,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdek12.org\/news\/2024\/2\/15\/MDE-releases-2023-24-Educator-Shortage-survey-results\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the MDE<\/a>. There were 149 middle school math teacher vacancies during 2023-24, accounting for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdek12.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/OETA\/final_educator_workforce_shortages_and_strategies_feb_15_sbe.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">largest shortage<\/a>&nbsp;of the 422 middle school teacher vacancies reported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After five years teaching in <strong>Holmes County<\/strong> Consolidated School District, <strong>Vantashia Jones<\/strong> will teach at <strong>Goodloe Elementary<\/strong> in <strong>Canton <\/strong>next year. She finished the middle school math program because she knows how serious the teacher shortage is and she wants to be prepared to step in if there is a need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMath is just one of those subjects where you say math and people are running out the door,\u201d Jones said.&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s very hard to get math teachers and I\u2019m like, OK, why not do something that I really enjoy doing and that I know is part of a subject where I can reach students.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While programs such as <strong>Mississippi Teacher Corps<\/strong> or <strong>Teach for America<\/strong> help meet the need for teachers in hard-to-staff areas, those teachers are often assigned to those areas for a limited amount of time, said Julie James, assistant director of professional learning for <a href=\"http:\/\/cmse.olemiss.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CMSE<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only program of its kind in the state, the Middle Math Institutes were created in 2021 as an alternative pathway for licensed teachers to become certified to teach middle school level math, filling vacancies with qualified educators already invested in rural and critical shortage communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program consists of four \u201ccontent institutes\u201d:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Numbers, systems, ratios and proportions&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expressions, equations and functions&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geometry&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Statistics and probability&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The hands-on, practical curriculum equips teachers with the skills to help students develop a complete understanding of math concepts, going beyond surface-level understanding and drawing connections between content, procedures and strategies to help students learn.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ucimg-3190-2.webp\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ucimg-3190-2.webp?resize=640%2C359\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-140811\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ucimg-3190-2.webp?resize=1024%2C574&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ucimg-3190-2.webp?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ucimg-3190-2.webp?resize=768%2C430&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ucimg-3190-2.webp?w=1232&amp;ssl=1 1232w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Emily Gladwell (left) participates in an interactive activity about X and Y axes during the Middle Math Institutes at the Center for Mathematics and Science Education. Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudies have shown us that you\u2019re going to teach the way you were taught,\u201d said <strong>Alice Steimle<\/strong>, instructional assistant professor of teacher education and director for the CMSE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany of us were taught procedural mathematics without necessarily understanding the \u2018why\u2019 behind it. To truly understand <strong>mathematics <\/strong>and build a strong mathematical foundation, the conceptual understanding is very important.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forty-two teachers have completed the Middle Math Institutes since 2021, and its benefits are not just appreciated by educators without a mathematics background.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Emily Gladwell<\/strong>, an eighth-grade math teacher at <strong>Batesville Junior High<\/strong>, completed the program this June to expand her knowledge and <strong>pedagogy <\/strong>as she works to become a math education consultant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComing to programs like this teaches me new strategies that I can use to help other teachers because that\u2019s what I want to do,\u201d she said.&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s very hands-on and that\u2019s one thing that we\u2019ve gotten away from because we let technology kind of come in and be overpowering in our instruction. This shows kids how to manipulate and if they\u2019re able to do it with their hands, it\u2019s going to stick.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earning a passing score on the Middle Level Math <strong>Praxis <\/strong>Exam or taking 18 hours of college-level math courses are also ways to achieve a middle school math endorsement.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The institutes are offered in person each summer or in a virtual format during the school year.
