{"id":140779,"date":"2024-07-02T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=140779"},"modified":"2024-07-02T12:41:38","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T17:41:38","slug":"university-of-mississippi-researcher-partners-with-the-university-of-tennessee-at-chattanooga-to-study-water-quality-with-nasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/university-of-mississippi-researcher-partners-with-the-university-of-tennessee-at-chattanooga-to-study-water-quality-with-nasa\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Mississippi Researcher Partners with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to Study Water Quality with NASA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UM, UTC partner in NASA\u2019s Research Initiation Award&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">by Clara Turnage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA is providing nearly $300,000 to fund a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and University of Mississippi study that aims to develop a way to determine water quality from space.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Xiaobo Chao<\/strong>, a senior research scientist in the <strong>National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/news\/2024\/05\/coming-up-roses-utc-scientists-land-nasa-research-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is partnering with with <strong>Azad Hossain<\/strong>, an environmental geoscientist at UTC, and <strong>Hong Qin<\/strong>, UTC\u2019s head of computer science and engineering, on the project.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hossain, the lead investigator on the research, is an Ole Miss alum and a former employee of the National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering. Submitted photo. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we&#8217;re hoping to do is develop a method to understand water quality using <strong>satellite imagery<\/strong> and <strong>remote sensing<\/strong>,\u201d Chao said. \u201cWhy would we use remote sensing? Well, to detect water quality normally, you take a sample from here, take a sample from there, and there\u2014it&#8217;s time-consuming work.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut remote sensing, you can detect large areas quickly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By looking at how much light is reflected off the water\u2019s surface the researchers will be able to determine the quality of the water and even see what pollutants or sediments may be in the water, Chao said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the grant focuses on using satellite imagery to detect water quality in the <strong>Tennessee River<\/strong>, Chao said the research will apply to any inland water body.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project is for the Tennessee River, but actually, in Mississippi, we already did something like this in the <strong>Ross Barnett Reservoir<\/strong> and at <strong>Enid Lake<\/strong>,\u201d he said. \u201cFor us, it\u2019s (understanding) sediment.\u00a0Sediment is, especially in Mississippi, the most important nonpoint source pollutant in water bodies.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be easier to determine why water sources are contaminated if we can identify what kind of sediments or pollutants are entering the water and where, Chao said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Chao-1200x801-1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Chao-1200x801-1.jpg?resize=640%2C428\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-140786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Chao-1200x801-1.jpg?resize=1024%2C684&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Chao-1200x801-1.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Chao-1200x801-1.jpg?resize=768%2C513&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Chao-1200x801-1.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Xiaobo Chao, senior research scientist in the National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering, and two researchers from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga recently received NASA&#8217;s Research Initiation Award. Submitted photo. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we&#8217;re doing is we&#8217;re using NASA satellite images and remote sensing to look at bodies of water and say, \u2018This is what we see as the <strong>sediment <\/strong>level, as the temperature and other measures,\u201d he said. \u201cThen we&#8217;re going out to those places, collecting samples and seeing if we&#8217;re right.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grant will fund two years of research.
