{"id":140776,"date":"2024-07-02T11:10:50","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T16:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=140776"},"modified":"2024-07-02T23:23:05","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T04:23:05","slug":"even-odd-ball-rock-and-roll-is-art-bark-receives-2nd-music-composition-award-from-mial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/even-odd-ball-rock-and-roll-is-art-bark-receives-2nd-music-composition-award-from-mial\/","title":{"rendered":"Even \u2018Odd Ball Rock and Roll\u2019 is Art: Bark Receives 2nd Music Composition Award from MIAL"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (MIAL) gave out their 45th annual awards this June, Thacker Mountain Radio Hour was well represented.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tim Lee<\/strong>, who serves as Thacker\u2019s production director, shared the Music Composition<br>(Contemporary) Award with his wife\u2014and bandmate\u2014<strong>Susan Lee<\/strong>. The couple, who record and tour<br>under the name <strong>Bark<\/strong>, he on guitar, she on drums, won for their album, <strong><em>LOUD<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other 2024 MIAL awardees with ties to north Mississippi and the radio show include past<br>Thacker guests <strong>Charles Reagan Wilson<\/strong> (Nonfiction); <strong>Lee Durkee<\/strong> (Life Writing); and <strong>Curtis<br>Wilkie<\/strong> (Lifetime Achievement). Upcoming Thacker guests, <strong>Jesmyn Ward<\/strong> (Fiction) and <strong>Kate<br>Medley<\/strong> (Photography), were also honored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The awards banquet was held June 8 at the <strong>Mississippi Museum of Art<\/strong> in <strong>Jackson, Mississippi<\/strong>.<br>The 2024 award is the second for Tim and Susan Lee and Bark. The duo won in the same<br>category in 2020 for their album, <strong><em>Terminal Everything<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first time we received the MIAL we were dumbfounded,\u201d Lee said in his recipients\u2019<br>remarks. \u201cOdd ball rock and roll bands like ours don\u2019t usually get attention from organizations<br>with &#8216;Arts and Letters&#8217; in the title.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In choosing LOUD for the 2024 award, the judges said the album displayed \u201ca uniqueness of<br>lyrics, a variety of textures and vocals while still maintaining a rock and roll stance and sound.\u201d<br>The judges also took note of Susan\u2019s album cover design (she\u2019s a graphic artist by day) in<br>declaring \u201cthe project overall the most engaging and interesting in the field of candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1978, the MIAL has given awards in musical composition, (contemporary and classical),<br>fiction, non-fiction, poetry, photography, visual art, and (in recent years) Youth Literature.<br>Judges are selected annually and must reside out of state without ties to the nominees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>LOUD<\/em> was made with producers <strong>Matt Patton<\/strong> and <strong>Bronson Tew<\/strong> at <strong>Dial Back Sound<\/strong> in <strong>Water<br>Valley<\/strong>, Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBetween 2019 and 2022, we had dealt with a pandemic together, recording in an unfamiliar<br>space together, and a giant move back home together,\u201d says Susan, of the couples\u2019 2022 move<br>back to Mississippi after 20 years in <strong>Knoxville, Tennessee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple, like so many, have dealt with a variety of family issues including the loss of close<br>relatives, friends, and even beloved family pets. And yet, the beat goes on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Bark (Motto: \u201cShake that thang \u2018till our heads explode\u201d), the radio show and<br>Susan\u2019s graphic design, the Lees also work with an arts organization, <strong>This Is Noteworthy<\/strong>. The<br>group produces an ongoing live music series in the Lees\u2019 adopted town of Water Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve enjoyed being back in Mississippi,\u201d Tim concludes. \u201cDespite the pandemic and various<br>family issues, working with musicians and producing a weekly show is something I enjoy doing<br>and know how to do. The MIAL awards have been a cool validation.\u201d<br>Susan Lee agrees. \u201cWe\u2019re grateful for the awards and the way the North Mississippi arts<br>community has embraced us.
