{"id":140707,"date":"2024-07-01T12:53:22","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=140707"},"modified":"2024-07-01T12:53:24","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:53:24","slug":"university-of-mississippi-to-lead-state-in-new-nanobiotechnology-consortium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/university-of-mississippi-to-lead-state-in-new-nanobiotechnology-consortium\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Mississippi To Lead State in New Nanobiotechnology Consortium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National Science Foundation awards $35M in grants\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">by Clara Turnage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>National Science Foundation<\/strong> has awarded $7 million to fund a University of Mississippi-led initiative to make the Magnolia State a new hub for innovative <strong>health care<\/strong> solutions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The foundation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/news\/nsf-awards-35m-networks-transform-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced today (June 27) that it is awarding $35 million to improve research infrastructure<\/a>\u00a0across the nation, including the funds to create the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=2414442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mississippi\u00a0Nano-bio ImmunoEngineering Consortium<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0That association, led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ole Miss<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0researchers, will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=2414442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help seven institutions across the state bolster their research and development in the field of nanobiotechnology<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The big picture idea is to create a thriving multidisciplinary research network to enhance the state&#8217;s capacity in biomaterials research, education and workforce development,\u201d said Adam Smith, associate professor of biomedical and chemical engineering and lead principal investigator for the grant.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis represents an opportunity for Mississippi to be known as a <strong>biomaterials <\/strong>research hub. Photo by Thomas Graning\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nanobiotechnology<\/strong> works with materials at the atomic and molecular level in the health care field to better treat illnesses and improve drug delivery, among its many uses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the most common examples of nanobiotechnology in our everyday lives is mineral sunscreen,\u201d said <strong>Thomas Werfel<\/strong>, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and co-principal investigator. \u201cThe zinc oxide active ingredient in these sunscreens are nanoparticles that absorb the sun\u2019s rays and protect your skin.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnother high-profile example of the impact of nanobiotechnology in today\u2019s world is the <strong>COVID-19<\/strong> vaccines that have saved millions of lives. Our consortium will now be able to conduct research on similar technologies and likely will bring new technologies to market in the coming years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The association will start with three main goals, Smith said. Submitted photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cMuch of our work focuses on the development of new materials to provide effective delivery of drugs \u2013 and especially nano-medicines \u2013 throughout the body and has a large potential impact.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the goal is not only to do good research but to make Mississippi an ideal location for the industry, Werfel said. Nanobiotechnology is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8828840\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of the fastest emerging fields of science<\/a>&nbsp;and was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bccresearch.com\/market-research\/biotechnology\/nanoparticles-biotechnology-drug-development-drug-delivery-report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">valued at more than $100 billion in 2023<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis consortium will have a major impact on the state of Mississippi through increased research output, STEM education outreach to the state\u2019s K-12 schools and the generation of new, patented technologies that can be taken to the marketplace and contribute to growing the Mississippi economy,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe infrastructure and educational opportunities that the consortium will establish will provide transformational opportunities for students interested in biotechnology, both in the classroom and outside the classroom walls.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consortium includes 13 researchers from:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Alcorn State University<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jackson State University\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mississippi State University\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tougaloo University\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>University of Mississippi\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>University of Mississippi Medical Center\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>University of Southern Mississippi\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The consortium will also offer research opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students while providing funds for more researchers across
