{"id":140649,"date":"2024-06-26T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=140649"},"modified":"2024-06-26T14:20:15","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T19:20:15","slug":"trent-lott-leadership-institute-celebrates-25th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/trent-lott-leadership-institute-celebrates-25th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Trent Lott Leadership Institute Celebrates 25th Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Institute celebrates milestones, success in developing future leaders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">by Marvis Herring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/lottleader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trent Lott Leadership Institute<\/a>\u00a0at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> celebrates its 25th anniversary, it continues to break new ground in developing future leaders through its unique programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Lott Leadership Institute has profoundly\u00a0impacted\u00a0many lives and embodies our university&#8217;s strengths by enhancing\u00a0leadership skills in bright, energetic students,&#8221; Chancellor <strong>Glenn Boyce<\/strong> said. &#8220;It&#8217;s one of the key reasons why the University of Mississippi is known for cultivating leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re grateful to Sen. Lott and all who make the institute the success it is today. We can&#8217;t wait to see what the next 25 years will bring.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month, institute leaders held an anniversary celebration at the offices of <strong>Altria<\/strong> in Washington, D.C.<a>\u00a0<\/a>Among the guests were Lott and his family, Boyce, Sen. <strong>Cindy Hyde-Smith<\/strong>, Sen. <strong>Roger Wicker<\/strong> and dozens of other guests, including alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think the institute has been a big success,&#8221; Lott said. &#8220;We have students in our programs now from all over the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s become a feeder program to Washington. We&#8217;ve got graduates of that program working for Sen. Wicker, Sen. Hyde-Smith, <strong>Sen. Hagerty<\/strong> of Tennessee and (as) the chief of staff to <strong>Congressman Kustoff<\/strong> in Tennessee. It really has become a great recruiting tool and it&#8217;s producing tremendous future leaders.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Melissa Jones<\/strong>, the institute&#8217;s associate director, highlighted several milestones since its inception:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New Leadership Endorsement:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/lottleader\/undergraduate-students\/leadership-endorsement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Available<\/a>\u00a0for all majors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alumni Advisory Board: Powerful network engaging graduates, students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Record Admissions: 72 students enrolled in the public policy leadership degree program in fall 2023<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High School Programs Expansion: New communities reached along the state&#8217;s <strong>Gulf Coast<\/strong>, record applications submitted for programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lott Leadership<\/strong> alumni, also known as &#8220;<strong>Lotties<\/strong>,&#8221; are excelling in various careers, including lawyers, lobbyists, presidential campaign coordinators, pharmaceutical executives and heads of marketing for large manufacturing and tech firms, Jones said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When you start thinking about public policy, it touches everything,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The health care you receive, the education you receive, the foods you eat. It&#8217;s not just government. Photo by Demiko Aiken\/Imagine Photography<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Caleb Herod<\/strong>, program manager at <strong>The Chicago Community Trust<\/strong>, graduated from Ole Miss with a degree in public policy leadership and a minor in mathematics in 2012. Learning new ways to be a transformative leader was the best thing the institute taught him, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You didn&#8217;t always have to be the person out in front or getting the most publicity, but you could lead with your ideas, your work ethic, the way you manage relationships and the focus you have on your long-term goals,&#8221; Herod said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seth Dickinson<\/strong>, special assistant attorney general in the <strong>Mississippi Attorney General&#8217;s Office<\/strong>, enrolled in a Lott Leadership high school program in the summer of 2013. Since earning his bachelor&#8217;s in public policy leadership, he&#8217;s tapped into the skills the institute teaches: preparedness, engagement and intellectual curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We were trained to question and collaborate, not follow and formulate, no matter how hard it was or how long it took,&#8221; Dickinson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded with donor funding in 1999, the institute began with high school outreach programs that identified students and offered comprehensive training to mold them into state and national leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its expansion has included partnering with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leadership.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Department of Public Policy Leadership<\/strong><\/a>, housed in the university&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libarts.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>College of Liberal Arts<\/strong><\/a>, to offer an interdisciplinary program that trains students to enter careers in public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s not another public policy leadership major at the undergraduate level in the SEC,&#8221; said <strong>William Gottshall<\/strong>, the institute&#8217;s executive director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;ve done is build our reputation for quality service and quality students.
