After a week of activities designed to nurture those skills, the <strong>Fulton <\/strong>native is leaving confident in her potential to be a change maker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What I&#8217;ve learned here has made me to more interested in leading the organizations I&#8217;m a part of in my high school,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;m active in our student council. Being at Girls State has definitely made me more knowledgeable about the different parts of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I plan on becoming even more involved in my community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brewer is among 165 rising high school seniors who participated in the weeklong leadership program, sponsored by Mississippi&#8217;s <strong>American Legion Auxiliary<\/strong>, that wrapped up Saturday (June 15). The delegates represented 78 high schools from across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Hosting the Girls State program at the University of Mississippi showcases the university&#8217;s profound commitment to supporting our next generation of leaders,&#8221; said <strong>Bradley Baker<\/strong>, director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/union.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the <strong>Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union<\/strong><\/a>. &#8220;By providing a platform where young women can engage in the democratic process, hone their leadership skills and foster a deep appreciation for civic responsibility, <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> helps to cultivate informed, empowered and capable future leaders.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 250 students participated in the <strong>American Legion<\/strong>&#8216;s annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/msboysstate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boys State<\/a>\u00a0two weeks ago. Ole Miss has presented\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.olemiss.edu\/american-legion-boys-state-returns-um\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boys State since 2015<\/a>\u00a0and began\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.olemiss.edu\/university-to-host-girls-state-for-the-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hosting Girls State in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to Boys State, delegates at Girls State take on roles in a bipartisan political system, electing leaders, and presenting a political platform for consideration by the total group. Photo by Thomas Graning\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are definitely smaller than Boys State, but being on Ole Miss&#8217; campus has allowed us to bring our program into the 21st century,&#8221; said <strong>Heather Burleson<\/strong>, in her third year as Girls State director. &#8220;This program enables young ladies to feel empowered to be the change agent that they want to see.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several of the delegates said Girls State has been a life-transforming experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I knew nothing about Girls State before coming here,&#8221; said <strong>Adyn Haley<\/strong>, of <strong>Eupora<\/strong>. &#8220;My interactions with the other girls have\u00a0been a lot more pleasant than what I&#8217;d expected. It&#8217;s really about <strong>women&#8217;s empowerment<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Geneva Montani<\/strong>, of Richton, said the week has improved her perception of leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been exposed to a lot more viewpoints on certain subjects,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That exposure is going to help me lead in a better way.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Girls State provided opportunities for <strong>Pegah Vasighi-Ansariar<\/strong>, of <strong>Jackson<\/strong>, to find friends and network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The women here all get along with and support one another,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Also, I&#8217;ve heard a variety of perspectives from the various speakers.
