{"id":140056,"date":"2024-06-10T17:35:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T22:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=140056"},"modified":"2024-06-10T18:01:19","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T23:01:19","slug":"journalists-rethink-local-news-infrastructure-at-um-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/journalists-rethink-local-news-infrastructure-at-um-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalists Rethink Local News Infrastructure at University of Mississippi Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Challenges, opportunities facing local journalism discussed at new event<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">by Marvis Herring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalists, lawmakers. and news investors must focus on a more innovative, collaborative business model to strengthen <strong>local journalism<\/strong> across <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>, industry experts agreed at the inaugural <strong>Local News Summit<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panel-style event, which ran Thursday and Friday (June 6-7), was funded by a $30,000 <strong>MacArthur Foundation<\/strong> grant. Or worse, they do anyway, where they have no information as the basis for the votes they cast. Local news is critical and ultimately it ladders up to a healthy democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spirit of bridging gaps across news platforms, the event invited journalists from digital, print and broadcast backgrounds. They were asked to question the historically competitive infrastructure of the local news industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t spend enough time thinking of ways to be more efficient,&#8221; Smith said. &#8220;We are not being smart about this as an industry; we&#8217;re being selfish.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acknowledging the state&#8217;s news deserts and gaps in <strong>journalism<\/strong> funding, organizers prioritized inviting some of the nation&#8217;s largest investors in innovative journalism, said <strong>Andrea Hickerson<\/strong>, dean of the <strong>School of Journalism and New Media<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s pretty clear that traditional business models of relying solely on paying subscribers or advertisers are struggling to find new audiences and just don&#8217;t have longevity,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s an acceptance from large funders that they have to play a role there and they want to play a role there, but there&#8217;s an acknowledgment that they don&#8217;t understand the local communities that they&#8217;re serving.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advocating the importance of journalism to lawmakers is another&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/press\/new-mit-sloan-research-shows-a-decrease-local-news-coverage-can-lead-to-individuals-voting-same-political-party-across-national-and-local-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">important step<\/a>&nbsp;toward a news renaissance, said Lori Henson, of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebuildlocalnews.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Rebuild Local News<\/strong><\/a>, a nonpartisan nonprofit advocating for public policies that help local journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;News is a public good, and public goods deserve public support,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The public policy piece of this has to be part of the discussion. Photo by Srijita Chattopadhyay\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Future advocacy efforts need to illustrate to the public the importance of journalism and the struggles the industry faces, said summit moderator Jim Brady of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Knight Foundation<\/strong><\/a>, a nonprofit providing journalism grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brady referenced 2024&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/journalism\/2024\/05\/07\/americans-changing-relationship-with-local-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a>&nbsp;finding that 63% of Americans believe their local news outlets are doing very well or somewhat well financially, despite thousands of shuttered local newsrooms in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/local-journalism-in-crisis-why-america-must-revive-its-local-newsrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s missing is a nuanced dialogue about how journalism helps communities, how it helps democracy, how it informs people and how it creates social ties,&#8221; Hickerson added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Those are the conversations we need to lead, and the university is a great place to lead that as kind of a neutral party that can provide research and development.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Local News Summit concluded Friday night with a kickoff celebration for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/news\/2024\/04\/jordan-gift-to-journalism\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Jordan Center for Journalism Advocacy and Innovation<\/strong><\/a>. The new center aims to restore news integrity and help everyone better discern accurate reporting. The school will begin a search for the center&#8217;s director this summer, Hickerson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We really want a dynamic leader in there who&#8217;s going to come and do interesting programming because, as journalists, we&#8217;re not really good at telling people what our value is; we just tell them the news,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The public makes a lot of assumptions about us that are erroneous or misleading.
