{"id":139989,"date":"2024-06-06T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-06T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=139989"},"modified":"2024-06-06T11:57:24","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T16:57:24","slug":"punishment-for-childhood-trauma-can-last-a-lifetime-researcher-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/punishment-for-childhood-trauma-can-last-a-lifetime-researcher-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Punishment for Childhood Trauma Can Last a Lifetime, Researcher Says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abigail Novak&#8217;s recent publication says punishment for children who experience trauma can worsen effects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">by Clara Turnage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When authority figures punish children for coping or adapting to trauma, it can affect the child for life, according to a new publication from <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> researcher <strong>Abigail Novak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Novak, assistant professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/legalstudies.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>criminal justice<\/strong> and <strong>legal studies<\/strong><\/a>, used her expertise in <strong>childhood trauma<\/strong> and adverse experiences to examine\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/study.sagepub.com\/system\/files\/Harris%2C_Judith_Rich_-_Why_Parents_Do_Not_Matter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Judith Harris&#8217;s theories of child socialization<\/a>. The <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> professor&#8217;s research has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0273229724000066?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published in the journal <strong>Developmental Review<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Punishing children for responding to traumatic experiences by acting out or withdrawing, for example, can reinforce damaging labels and alienate the child, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I went back to the drawing board, read her work again and figured out a road map about what Harris&#8217; work tells us about <strong>ACEs<\/strong>, or adverse childhood experiences,&#8221; Novak said. &#8220;She was making a lot of arguments about labeling. Labeling argues that when individuals respond in a certain way, in a deviant way, people label them as deviant and that label follows them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When we assign a child as good or bad, that shapes their peer groups, their experiences and their life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children who experience trauma are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8758116\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less likely to have positive relationships with the education system<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3089672\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less likely to graduate high school or pursue college<\/a>. They are also more likely to be arrested and jailed and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychiatry\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2020.00531\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">struggle with <strong>mental health<\/strong>, <strong>addiction<\/strong> and <strong>homelessness<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/childhood-adverse-event-life-expectancy-abuse-mortality\/#:~:text=A%20difficult%20childhood%20reduces%20life,large%2Dscale%20epidemiological%20study%20finds.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Childhood adversity also reduces life expectancy by 20 years<\/a>, as those who experience it are more likely to experience heart attacks, strokes, obesity and other health complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why childhood trauma affects people throughout their lives could be linked to how they adapted to their trauma and how their authority figures responded to these adaptations, Novak said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A child who experiences trauma\u2014whether that be the death of a family member, physical or sexual abuse, or otherwise\u2014develops adaptive behaviors that may protect them from their traumatic experience at home, but encourage labeling in the classroom, Novak said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When kids are little, they go through trial and error,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s <strong>child development<\/strong> broadly, and we know that this is what kids do. They try to do what they do at home in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For kids who are exposed to <strong>trauma<\/strong>, they have adapted these maladaptive coping behaviors at home. If they go into the school environment and those behaviors are met with rejection, punishment, etc., that shapes the child.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a child withdraws or acts out\u2014both common child responses to trauma\u2014they may be labeled as &#8220;quiet&#8221; or &#8220;bad.&#8221; As a known &#8220;bad kid,&#8221; they may not be considered for gifted programs or accelerated classes. Photo by Thomas Graning\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Punishing a child who is still learning to navigate complex social structures\u2014such as being in a classroom filled with other children\u2014only worsens the effect of childhood adversity, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For kids who are exposed to adversity, if they aren&#8217;t given the chance to adapt their behaviors or given the resources to do so, they&#8217;re going to experience rejection, which is going to have negative consequences for them down the road into adolescence, into adulthood,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Judith Harris is insistent that you don&#8217;t need to change their behavior; you need to change their environment because their behavior is contingent on the environment. That&#8217;s a large call for macro policy solutions, things that shift environments. It requires tons of political will, and it&#8217;s hard to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond such large-scale changes, however, more ground-level changes are possible that can improve children&#8217;s lives, she said. Novak recommends a national minimum age for arrest, arguing that below a certain age, children are not culpable and competent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncchc.org\/minimum-age-of-prosecution-of-12-what-does-it-mean-and-why-does-it-matter\/#:~:text=The%20most%20common%20minimum%20age%20is%2010,highest%20minimum%20age%20in%20the%20United%20States.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mississippi<\/strong>&#8216;s minimum age for <strong>arrest<\/strong> is 10<\/a>; the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.njjn.org\/our-work\/raising-the-minimum-age-for-prosecuting-children#:~:text=United%20Nations%20(UN)%20Convention%20the,old%20without%20carve%2Dout%20exceptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>United Nations<\/strong> and a handful of states<\/a>\u00a0have set the age as high as 14.
